Rupert.

Rue has been acting funny lately. Irritable. He had an abcess two weeks ago, which I had taken care of, and then he got in a scuffle with one of the boys over something silly and got himself all scratched up again, so I was worried he would get another abcess. I was keeping an eye on him, and occasionally washing his scraps with this first aid ( Read more... )

But, doesn't benign mean non-cancerous?

I... I'm not sure. My working definition of "cancer" is any abnormal cell growth. A tumor would be abnormal cell growth. Perhaps my definition is incorrect.

Benign means non-malignant. Which is what I don't get.

The vet said the growth is benign, and then said if I don't get it operated on, it'll grow. If it's non-malignant, doesn't that mean it won't grow?

I'm confused.

benign means that it will grow but will not spread to other parts like malignant cancers do. benign growths especially can get quite large, but once removed they will not come back.

poor rattie. I want rats someday when I'm sure that I have the money to take care of them properly.

yeah, I didn't mean it that way. I know it sounded like I did and for that I apologize. I mean I don't have the money to even start considering taking care of another living creature.
unfortunately tumors seem to be common in rats. I wish you luck :)

the lady at the place said between 150 and 200....it really seems high. the vet said that he likes to remove them the size it is now....he said a couple brought in a rat with one and then waited 3 months to get it taken care of and the suture was from his elbow to his back leg....and it weighed like 6 onces or something. also rue is not a fat head. he weighed in at 1pound 1 ounce. and i figure the ounce is the tumor. so you dont have to worry about it right off but im thinking it can impare his movement after a while.
