First there was the herd of flying bison, passing over Metropolis. They were mostly hidden by the clouds, and very high up, but if you squinted at the right moment, you could make them out

Yeah, Katara's not going to let her brother out of her sight ever again, thanks. One of her hands holds his (despite his protests that it makes him look less manly) and the other stays reassuringly on her container of bending water as she leads him through the unfamiliar, empty streets.

Less manly? He's wearing a dress. Hand-holding is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Any grumbling quickly subsides, though, at the sheer... city-ness of the city. The buildings! Are too big! And made of rock! As is the floor! And it's just generally very, very weird!

"...You know, I think I might have preferred the island."

"There was no food on the island," Katara points out. "There's food here. ...Somewhere, I'm sure. We just need to find it."

[hercynicbrother]

"There's only weeds here." Sokka scuffs the pavement with his shoe. And then, because that sounded dangerously vegetarian: "Even food has to eat."

Mel isn't really one for socialising or meeting new people right now. It's this terminal case of apathy she's got about everything.

But she certainly wasn't expecting to round a corner and see...

"Sokka?"

The name's spoken out loud before she knows what he's doing.

"...Do you know each other?" she asks, looking from Sokka to the strange woman with the colourful hair and back.

"I'm more worried that she recognises me in this."

Translation: no.

That's not really an answer Mel's going to accept right now, as seemingly ignoring Katara (She'll say hi and catch up with things since the apartments in a minute), she's racing towards them.

Honestly, she's aiming for a hug, but that might not be that obvious.

It's before, or possibly after running into Sokka-who-isn't-her-brother, that Mel's emerging from an apartment freshly looted, and notices Roku.

the only real reason she double takes is his outfit. It reminds her of what Zuko was wearing when she first met him.

Roku double takes, too. But mostly because of the hair. He's not used to seeing hair quite that colourful.

"You wouldn't happen to know where this is, would you?"

"Think they call it Metropolis," Mel says, too surprised to act cool and sulky.

"...you're Fire Nation."

"No, really?" Roku frowns. "Why would a herd of flying bison be coming to Metropolis?"

What? It's totally a valid question.
