First there was the herd of flying bison, passing over Metropolis. They were mostly hidden by the clouds, and very high up, but if you squinted at the right moment, you could make them out

Yeah, Katara's not going to let her brother out of her sight ever again, thanks. One of her hands holds his (despite his protests that it makes him look less manly) and the other stays reassuringly on her container of bending water as she leads him through the unfamiliar, empty streets.

[hercynicbrother]

Less manly? He's wearing a dress. Hand-holding is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Any grumbling quickly subsides, though, at the sheer... city-ness of the city. The buildings! Are too big! And made of rock! As is the floor! And it's just generally very, very weird!

"...You know, I think I might have preferred the island."

[hisflyingsister]

"There was no food on the island," Katara points out. "There's food here. ...Somewhere, I'm sure. We just need to find it."

[hercynicbrother]

"There's only weeds here." Sokka scuffs the pavement with his shoe. And then, because that sounded dangerously vegetarian: "Even food has to eat."

[hisflyingsister]

She laughs. "Maybe we should have kept following the flying bison. I'm sure they know where to find plenty of delicious vegetables."

Yes, Sokka. Your sister is making fun of you. She does that.

[hercynicbrother]

"Or, you know, I'm sure they wouldn't have missed one..."

Ancient and stately beasts of legend: 0. Sokka's stomach: 1.

[hisflyingsister]

"...Right. Of course you can bring down a flying bison all by yourself, Sokka."

In case you can't tell, that's sarcasm. She's edging in on your territory! For shame!

[hercynicbrother]

Perhaps, but Sokka is still reigning champion! Though not when he says this:

"Oh, I think in the right circumstances I might."

Is he joking? The world may never know.

"...Uh-huh. Hey, I wonder what's in there?"

The building she indicates has unfamiliar writing on the front, and there are bright colours.

Katara has found an abandoned grocery store!

A few weeks of post-apocolypse mean that most of its groceries have abandoned it, too. But still!

"I'll check it out," he offers, moving carefully towards the door.

[hisflyingsister]

"Okay!"

Like hell is she letting go of his hand. Katara follows close behind.

[hercynicbrother]

Sokka can be a little thick-skulled, but he's had plenty of time to notice the like-hellness. He glances over his shoulder at her, with a half smile.

"Hey, I'm not disappearing again. I checked my diary and there wasn't any scheduled."

[hisflyingsister]

"I... I know. I guess."

She very reluctantly lets go of his hand. And stays close.

"But what if it happens again and we don't both go to the same place this time?"

[hercynicbrother]

Katara! Don't interrupt reassuring!Sokka with difficult questions!

"Well... it won't, will it? Just how many peoplenapping universes can there be?"

[hisflyingsister]

"I don't know! I didn't think there were any, and then look what happened! We got... well, peoplenapped!"

[hercynicbrother]

"To exactly the same island. And so did two Avatars and about a million bison. That's probably not co-incidence, right?"
