Under the Beautiful Sky
By Shattered Tenshi
The moment Matahachi stepped out of the door, he looked up into the sky. Something good was going to happen. He could feel it. The sun was shining and the sky was just too beautiful to ignore. "I wonder what will happen," he muttered to himself. Fixing his obi and hakama, he started to head towards his family's shop.
He worked diligently for the whole day, the feeling of anticipation at the back of his mind, calling to him every now and then. When he closed down the shop and headed home alone since he had sent his father back earlier on, he kept looking up at the sky, smiling at the sunset. It was beautiful and again, he knew something good was going to occur.
Just when he walked close enough to see his house's door, he noticed someone standing there, ready to call and walk in. The figure was familiar and suddenly, Matahachi's heart skipped a beat. It couldn't be who he though it was, could it?
"Ano..." Calling out nervously, he slowly walked up to the figure.
That's when the other turned.
Matahachi was sure time stopped. They just stood there, staring at each other for what felt like eternity. It was like a dream. He wasn't sure if it was real. Was he really there?
"Matahachi..."
The familiar, nostalgic voice confirmed his suspicion. It was really was him. It really was him after all.
"Mi-Mineji..." Matahachi couldn't move for a second. What should he do? Run up to him and hug him? Punch him in the shoulder? His legs were heavy and he had trouble moving them. Finally, he stumbled a few steps forward. He was pretty sure he looked like an idiot right now, too shocked to give a grin or even just a smile to the other.
Once he was just a step away, standing right in front of the other, Mineji grinned at him and pulled him into a hug. "Matahachi, what's with that look? Don't you have a smile for your friend here?"
Not knowing how to react, Matamachi just stood there as he allowed Mineji to hug him. Luckily, there weren't any people on the street. Otherwise, surely they'll give them weird looks. Finally, when he realized the warmth against him was really there, Matahachi raised his arms and wrapped them around Mineji. "Mineji..." he murmured.
After a few seconds though, Matahachi quickly pulled back. He didn't want anyone to see them and think weird things. There was nothing between them, only happiness to see each other again after a few years of separation. He smiled at Mineji. "What are you doing here?"
Mineji chuckled. "To visit you of course. What else?"
Smiling sheepishly, Matahachi said, "Sou ka. How's...everyone?" It was hard to name names, seeing that even though he wasn't far from Aizu, not all news reach him. Only some important news reached him. Like how their fellow members of Byakkotai had committed sepukku a few years ago, when they all separated. His smile faded a little, thinking about what a perfect reunion it would have been if Gisaburou had been with them. They had promised each other to meet once again too...
Just then, Matahachi snapped out of his reverie. "Ah, sorry, what am I doing? Please come in. I'm sure my parents would be happy to see you again."
Nodding, Mineji followed Matahachi inside and called out an "ojamashimasu". Soon, they were inside the house, sitting down as Matahachi's parents greeted Mineji happily, offering him tea and some dango.
Mineji smiled nostalgically at the dango. "Thank you." He nodded his head.
After a while, the two of them were left alone in the room.
"So, how are you, Matahachi?"
Matahachi smiled. "I'm fine. I work every day at the store that our relative has left for us to carry on after he died. My whole family is doing well."
Nodding his head, Mineji said, "That's good. Aniue and I are doing well as well. He got married a year or two ago. His wife is expecting a child in a few months."
"That's great news! You will be an uncle soon!" Matahachi picked up his cup of tea and took a sip. "What about your parents?"
Mineji paused. "...they died."
"Oh." Matahachi looked down at the tatami. "I...gomen nasai."
Shaking his head, Mineji said, "It's alright. I doubted this kind of news would reach you anyways."
There was a moment of silence before Matahachi asked, "How long are you staying then?"
"Seven days. I cannot stay away for too long since my help is needed, but I felt like seeing you again."
Matahachi blushed lightly. "S-sou desu ka..."
Suddenly, he heard his mother's voice outside. "Matahachi?"
"Hai. What is it, hahaue?"
"Is it alright if Sakai-sama sleeps in your room? The guest room will need to be cleaned up quite a bit."
Matahachi looked at Mineji who nodded his head. "Hai. Mineji will stay in my room for the whole time he is here then."
"We have lots to catch up on," Mineji said with a smile.
Returning the smile, Matahachi nodded his head. "We certainly do."
That whole night, both of them laid on their futons and talked about nearly anything and everything. It felt like they were teenagers once again. When they finally did fall asleep, it was already the crack of dawn, and Matahachi gained an unexpected day of rest.
After they woke up and ate their lunch, Matahachi showed Mineji around town, bringing him to different stores and places that he liked. The day after that, they did the same thing, since Matahachi thought Mineji needed to see a lot more other things.
When the tour of the town finally ended, the two of them came back to the house tired and worn-out. Matahachi offered to let Mineji to take a bath first, but the other insisted otherwise.
Therefore, when Mineji finally came out of the bath, Matahachi was already in his room. Arriving at the door, Mineji didn't think too much and just slid the door open, surprising himself with the sight of a half-dressed Matahachi.
Mineji just stood at the doorway, staring at the long scar that ran down Matahachi's back, marring the perfectly smooth skin.
Blushing, Matahachi quickly brought the kimono back up, covering his skin. After he finished wearing the garment, he sat on top of his futon, wondering if he should meet Mineji's gaze.
"How...how did you get that?" Mineji asked softly as he knelt down beside Matahachi and traced the covered scar lightly, causing a shiver to run down Matahachi's spine.
Almost leaning back towards Mineji's hand, Matahachi said, "Even though Kitakata wasn't as close to the frontlines as Aizu, there was still fighting going on. During a fight, I was careless and got slashed by the enemy..."
Still stroking the other's back, Mineji said, "It must have hurt..."
"Not that bad." Matahachi paused. "I was unconscious for a while anyways. By the time I woke up, the wound was healing already." He bit down on his lip and held back a shudder, feeling Mineji breathing against his ear.
"Sou..." Mineji stopped the stroking and just rested his hand on Matahachi's back. "Well, I'm glad you're alive, Matahachi."
A small smile playing on Matahachi's face, he whispered, "I am too. That you're alive as well, Mineji." He turned his head to look at Mineji. "I'm glad."
Mineji's eyes softened, and he smiled as well. Their eyes meeting, Mineji slowly leaned in closer. Matahachi blinked and slowly fluttered his eyes closed as a light blush appeared on his face.
Suddenly, footsteps from outside caused them to jump apart. There was a moment of awkward silence when whoever outside had passed. Mineji moved away from where he was sitting and slid into his own futon. "Oyasumi, Matahachi..."
"Ah...o-oyasumi..." Matahachi slid into his own futon as well, the blush still apparent on his face.
The night was going to be long.
On the fifth day of Mineji's stay, Matahachi brought him to a spring hidden in the woodes for a relaxing bath.
While Mineji stripped quite quickly, Matahachi took longer, folding his hakama neatly before slipping into the water. All the while, he kept facing Mineji, making sure the other didn’t see his scar.
"It's a really nice place," Mineji commented, looking at their surroundings.
Matahachi smiled. "I found this place when I was exploring the woods two years ago. Not a lot of people know about this place."
Mineji grinned. "Does that mean I'm special? Since you brought me here?"
A shade of red tinted Matahachi's face. "I...well, Mineji is my best friend and..."
Chuckling, Mineji said, "I'm just teasing you. Thank you for bringing me here."
"Un..." Matahachi leaned back against a rock by the water. "If only Gisaburou was here with us..."
At the mention of their friend, the two of them fell silent. The only audible sound was the water moving throughout the spring.
"Ah..." Mineji broke the silence. "Gisaburou would have liked here as well..."
Matahachi nodded his head in agreement. They fell silent once more.
When Matahachi decided he had soaked enough, he started to get out of the water. In an awkward position though, since he was still trying to face Mineji the whole time. Struggling to get out of the water, he didn't notice Mineji treading towards him. When he did notice, Mineji's hand was already on his back, his fingers ghosting over his scar.
"M-Mineji...?" A shiver ran down his spine as he felt the other's fingers brushing over the bumpiness of his scar. "What...what are you doing?"
Still touching the scar, Mineji said, "You don't have to hide your scar from me, Matahachi..."
Matahachi blushed, realizing the other had read his actions. "It's ugly..." he whispered.
"It's not ugly," Mineji said. He moved his hand so he was touching Matahachi's soft skin instead. "Matahachi is still beautiful..."
Feeling extremely embarrassed, Matahachi slid back into the water, hiding half his face under water, unable to meet Mineji in the eyes. He let out a breath of air in the water, causing bubbles to form.
"Don't drown on me, Matahachi..." Mineji reached down and grabbed Matahachi's arm, pulling him up.
The next thing Matahachi knew was his lips against Mineji's.
Blinking his eyes, Matahachi couldn't even react as Mineji pulled back and just smiled at him.
"The sky is beautiful today, isn't it, Matahachi?"
The week ended quickly and soon, it was the last night that Mineji was staying. The two of them were in Matahachi's room, getting ready to rest for the night.
Ever since that day in the spring, Matahachi was at a lost as to how to act around Mineji. He didn't know what the other meant by the action, and it was dangerous to assume anything. After all, if anyone found out, they'd be exiled in a snap. Or at least force them apart so they can never see each other again.
Mineji was acting all normal though, as if the kiss never happened. It made Matahachi confused, and even now as he laid down on his futon, he was still thinking about the situation, making him blush lightly.
"Matahachi..."
"Hm?" Matahachi blinked in surprise when he turned around, still lying down, and found himself facing Mineji. "M-Mineji...?"
"I love you, Matahachi."
"Ehh?" Blinking his eyes rapidly, Matahachi felt his heart skip a beat. Did Mineji just...confess to him?
"I love you," Mineji repeated before slowly closing the gap between them, placing his lips on top of Matahachi's.
It was wrong. They shouldn't be doing this. Then why does it feel so good? Why does it feel so right? Fluttering his eyes closed, Matahachi surprised himself, pressing firmer into the kiss.
Mineji smiled against his lips, wrapping an arm around Matahachi's waist, sneaking into the other's futon. He pressed their bodies closer as he deepened the kiss.
Whimpering softly, Matahachi inched his hands up Mineji's chest before wrapping them around the other's neck. He gasped when he felt Mineji's tongue prodding his lips, which gave Mineji the perfect opportunity to explore his warm cavern.
Matahachi wasn't sure when, but soon, they were both naked and he was flipped around, lying on his stomach. He could feel the soft lips brushing against his rough scar. "M-Mineji..."
"Matahachi is beautiful..." Mineji murmured as he pressed butterfly kisses all over Matahachi's back. "Beautiful..."
Trying to lower the sound of all those whimpers and moans that were slipping from his lips, Matahachi writhed slightly, feeling the blush covering his body.
Everything Mineji did was gentle. Even as he was turned around and more kisses were placed on him, the feeling of Mineji's lips against his skin just made his skin tingle. There was a cloud of lust and desire at the back of his mind, but everything was slow, almost soothing. It wasn't about the lust, it was all about showing their emotions for each other through touches.
Matahachi had never felt more complete as Mineji pushed into him, filling and stretching his inner muscles. By the look the other gave him, Matahachi knew Mineji felt the same way. They were made for each other.
Mineji's movements were slow, but not too slow that it became torturous. Matahachi felt pain, but the joy of being completed overcame it. Soon, they were just pressed as close as possible as they rocked their hips against each other, murmuring each other's name over and over again.
When they both came, it had to be the most wondrous feeling they have ever experienced.
Mineji laid on top of Matahachi, breathing unevenly as the stickiness between them made it a bit uncomfortable. "Matahachi," he murmured, running his fingers down Matahachi's face, placing a few pieces of damp hair behind Matahachi's ear.
"Hmm...?" Matahachi looked at him blearily, still recovering from the experience. He shifted slight and winced at the soreness he felt.
After pressing a soft kiss on Matahachi's lips, Mineji pulled back and stared into the other’s eyes. "There's someone waiting for me back in Aizu..."
Without showing a look of surprise, Matahachi just gave a bitter smile. "My parents have already decided on my marriage partner..."
Somewhere deep inside their hearts, before their lips touched for the first time, they already knew it would turn out like this. There was no way they would ever end up together. They would only end up risking each other's lives because there was a definite possibility of death if a forbidden relationship between them was discovered. They could also never refuse the prospect of a marriage, not when descendants were so important. They wouldn't let their family name, not when they had struggled to survive.
The two shared a knowing, understanding look. They didn't say anymore. They didn't need to hear it - it was probably their last time meeting each other. Mineji leaned and brought their lips together again.
For the whole night, they made love again and again, burnng each other's curves to their fingers, memorizing the feeling of each other. They murmured each other's names over and over, slipping words of love in between. Before dawn broke, they fell asleep, Matahachi leaning against Mineji's chest while Mineji's arms wrapped tightly around Matahachi's waist.
When they woke up and left the room, all lingering feelings of love disappeared. They treated each other normally and ate breakfast with Matahachi’s family. Soon, it was time for Mineji to leave.
Standing at the entrance gate of the town, Matahachi's family had left the two alone after they bid farewell to Mineji.
"I guess...this is good-bye then."
Mineji nodded his head. "Yes, good-bye."
There was a short moment of silence. "Live happily. I hope you have a few healthy children..." Matahachi didn't know what else to say.
Giving a short nod, Mineji said, "You too." Then, he smiled. "Our children, our grand-children will become good friends. I'm sure."
"Even though we're in different places?" Matahachi asked.
Mineji chuckled lightly. "We promised each other, didn't we? When we separated back then..." He clasped hands with Matahachi. "Well, I should get going now."
"Un..." They didn't let go of each other's hands.
Suddenly, Mineji pulled Matahachi into a hug. "Just one more time..." he murmured. "Remember, Matahachi, the rain will stop someday, and you'll definitely see the beautiful sky..."
When they finally let go and waved their hands in farewell, they didn't say good-bye. It was too difficult.
Matahachi watched Mineji walk away, until his figure disappeared from the path. That's when the first drop of tear finally rolled down his cheek. Where was his beautiful sky?
"Good-bye, Sakai Mineji..."
