When we bought the house in summer 2003, we had to buy new washer and dryer b/c the sellers took theirs with. Sears was having a sale offering a substantial discount on a third appliance, so we replaced the dishwasher. I just got a new dishwasher and the manual tells me that the amount of detergent depends on your water hardness (lots for hard water, half-full for soft), which makes sense.

Indeed it does.

We have not hard water.

Even if the water was hard, we do not need as much detergent as TS wanted to use. He would always fill the compartment and then squirt extra onto the door of the d/w, because he wanted MORE clean dishes than the full soap compartment could provide.
