A conversation analysis with Colin and Bradley

Oct 21, 2010 23:13

For my Linguistics course I had to write an essay analysing a conversation, specifically, an interview. I chose to do this interview with Colin and Bradley. (The Geek Syndicate one from the BFI event.) I'm mainly discussed power dynamics. I must say, it is SO strange to be writing about Colin and Bradley and have it not be a fanfic! My brain kept ( Read more... )

I get the gist of your analysis here, but don't feel I know enough of the subject to say something constructive. However I grin in delight every time you say something like 'Colin asserts dominance'. *grins in delight*

This is really interesting stuff! I'll have to come back, and re-read and mull, but I'm delighted that you wrote this and then shared it with us. I think it confirms some of what I was thinking, but of course there's also lots of food for thought here.

Thank you! ♥

So are you saying that Colin is more dominant (and Bradley allows/encourages? it) for topics that might not matter to the show but that for more serious points, they are equally supportive?

Very interesting. I'd love to see this done with something where they aren't interrupted with questions or where they are just rambling on.

This is an interesting read. Body language during conversations interests me. This is another layer to conversations that I don't often think about.

You know what I find most interesting about this? The fact that in my head, I've always felt that Bradley tends to "dominate" more when they're in joint interviews. Clearly that isn't the case any longer, though I wonder what an analysis would look like from one of their earlier interviews. Still... considering how little I know about this topic, it may have always been this way, and I just perceive Bradley speaking slightly more as him being more in control of the conversation.

But anyway...

I have to say I can also appreciate how difficult it must have been to just analyse the conversation and NOT delve into detail about how madly in love they are, LMAO ;). Good work, you! :)

I feel this way, too, except now I'm thinking that it's not so much of him taking control as it is Colin letting him take control (if that makes sense). And when Colin talks, Bradley lets him take control, too. Seems kind of boringly equal to me. :P

I tend to think that the intense admiration on Bradley's part, however you interpret it, accounts for things like letting Colin interrupt him and apologising, rather that Colin actively trying to take control.

Actually, my real thought has been that in the beginning, Colin was a LOT more nervous and shy in interview settings, and I kind of saw it as Bradley taking a bit more control (as allowed by Colin) because he was more comfortable in those sort of situations. And maybe it was slightly protective-ish on Bradley's part, though I certainly think it was a mutual thing on both their parts ( ... )
