"I don’t know if I will be returning to Downton."

[Downton Abbey S3/S4 Spoilers Ahead]

Day 11 - How long did you hold out hope that Dan Stevens would sign for S4?Dan Stevens' line up until late last fall was always that he "didn't know" if he would be returning for S4. But to cry "spoilers" in response to a straightforward question made us sit up and take notice. ... What exactly was going down in the CS 2012?

ARGH. Yes. I remember saying that very thing -- why is the status of a perfectly healthy younger male character somehow considered "spoilers" (and would anyone else's return or not be viewed with that same ~mystique).

When Michael Ausiello (TVLine) asked him during the TCA press junket (back in July) if Dan Stevens was eying an exit from the series, Fellowes responded "Dan is in the show," and then went on to pooh-pooh all the rumors which, according to Fellowes, started up because Dan left to do The Heiress on Broadway, which, he pointedly noted, only lasts six monthsSigh, yes...JF "willingly participated in a campaign of misinformation." To this day, I'm not sure that was the right decision.

It's a hard one. The problem for JF is he had to work around Sybil's death too. Otherwise I would say it would have been better to kill Matthew off (if that's what he felt he had to do) in 3x08. But that was only 3 weeks (RT) from Sybil's departure. So he couldn't do that.

I think in the end the gamble will pay off for him -- or at least as much as it possibly can. He will lose people for sure (like me), but you can see already how most people are adapting pretty well. And we've another 6 months to go. I mean it's not anyone's ideal, but the "new love interest" (blech, blech, blech) has a lot of people's curiosity piqued. (But I still say it will be short lived and Downton will start its gradual decline. In fact, I dare say it has already ( ... )
