A fair question, because the Vespa is certainly the be-all, end-all. :-)
A number of reasons:
Mainly, the 50cc and 150cc Vespas are best for one rider. We're probably going to be hauling the H.A. to school, and need a smaller machine that can comfortably and safely seat 2, and go more than 30 m.p.h.
The "extras" we really want (like a rear trunk-box thingy, ABS brakes, and dual shocks) are standard on other models, and extra $$ with Vespa.
The on-line Vespas are not working out to be as good a deal as many of these others.
Ah right, makes sense. Well, good for you! Scootering seems like it would be so much fun . . . I'm not normally envious of people who have to buy their own modes of transportation, but in this case I am!
I love that Lance Vintage 150. I'm a sucker for aesthetics. We'd really like to add one of these to our car (Jetta TDI with three car seats in the back!), but my own BH drives ~20mi one way to work...on a highway that would not tolerate the 'potential' 55mph. A motorcycle is still a possibility...
True, true, but here we can do it all "in-town" here, fortunately. I'm leery of getting anything that can go over 45 m.p.h., quite frankly. But a motorcycle's gas mileage is certainly better.

*facepalm*
I'm with you on the 45mph, especially considering the future inheritor.
