We really haven't used the Saturn all summer, for the second summer in a row. And the weather is decent enough for months at a time here that we're thinking we might be able to put the second car into retirement. The current plan is to purchase a scooter and see what happens during the winter. If nothing else, we can drop the insurance down on the Saturn, save more gas money, and reduce our carbon footprint. Had already been thinking about this for about a year, but a close friend just got himself a very chic little Honda scooter, and we're quite enamored with it.
The B.H. has already mentioned the possibility of the scooter being the H.A.'s first vehicle. Which makes me immediately start thinking about 50cc engines, instead of 150cc. Because it's my JOB to overthink and overprotect, dammit! But it does make me recall that when I was 14, we were living 10 miles out of town on a 7-acre farm, and I was able to get a "farm permit" to drive from home to school. In Nebraska and other agrarian states, the farm permit originally allowed school kids to drive tractors to school, as well as the more standard vehicles. It wasn't a Vespa, but I had a little Italian moped, and that was just about the only good thing about Nebraska, for me. We've been checking into licensing and insurance requirements, and it seems like a good deal for us--especially since, here in BF Egypt, EVERYTHING in town is a maximum of 10 minutes away. :-)
Anyhow. If you're interested, here is the narrowed field:
The
Roketa Catalina 150cc. The Touring 150cc. The Lance Vintage 150cc (I love love love LOVE this one). The Romans 50cc. In other news, the H.A. returned triumphantly from camp having picked up mad skillz in archery, canoeing, skateboarding, and ping-pong, and with a firm desire to go for TWO weeks next summer. And the pictures he took with his disposable cameras turned out pretty well! He's got a better eye than I do. I realize that's not saying much, but it's heartening for a mom to see some sort of evolution in action.
In yet other news, I have lost my phone. I know for a fact that it is somewhere in this house, but I have spent days looking for it. And no, before you suggest it, calling me won't help, because I had turned off the ringer because we went to the movies. *sigh* So if anybody's been trying to call me, I apologize. If I don't find it today I'll take the B.H.'s ooooold model to the Sprint store and see if they'll hook me up temporarily.
And lastly, just two more weeks until
Ashland! We're counting the days. This year, in addition to all the Shakespeare plays that we'll see with my students, the B.H. and I have managed a schedule that will allow us to see EVERYTHING currently playing. Whew! My butt might be permanently numb by the end of the week...but it'll be worth it.
