I find adopt-a-thons and humane societies to be torture, and unless I want to come home with another cat, I steer clear of them. You have remarkable strength in a time of heartbreak not to have made off with the cat therapist (which I would've done).
Your computer service people are fail. I would never do business with them again after this experience!

The computer was in the shop for almost 3 weeks before we finally got it back. It's home now, but we're still in the process of hooking up the Internet & so on.

New login information? You mean for the domain? I let the domain expire back in May, as I can't afford to renew it right now and the $200+ could be put to better use. I thought I'd posted about that, but memory fails me at the moment.
