A random literary quote changed the course of my friend Carlos' life, a number of years ago.

This reminds me of an old Doonesbury. Mike Doonesbury is tutoring Rufus, a black kid in the inner city. Mike gets upset when Rufus doesn't do his homework, when Rufus chimes in "Afro-American Day!" Mike leaves and Rufus's buddy asks "Afro-American Day?" Rufus replies that it's the best he could come up with on short notice.
