A random literary quote changed the course of my friend Carlos' life, a number of years ago.
Meeting with the headmaster of his private high school after his latest escapade, Carlos was asked why he should not be expelled. The story goes that he replied,
"As Justine said to Clea in The Alexandria Quartet,, 'Just because you're spending all your time having fun doesn't mean you are happy in the end'".
He was not expelled.
I don't care for Lawrence Durrell's work, can barely get through the movie they made from Justine. In lieu of reading the four books, I've done a search using amazon's "search this book" function on "Justine/Clea", on "happy", and on ""happiness". Nothing similar comes up.
Does this quote ring a bell with anyone? (By the way, I don't know how to get in touch with Carlos, it's been years.)
