On Sunday we drove into Minnesota to visit Lake Itasca. It took about 2 hours to drive there and once there we went hiking a bit before going to the stream that theoretically marks the start of the Mississippi. I like having a good sense of balance; the last thing I want is to someday be an old lady prone to tripping and breaking a leg or hip like some elderly people I know.

I read about it somewhere and, if IIRC, the aim is to be able to hold your balance on one leg for at least half a minute. When I started I could barely do it for 15 seconds but after a year or two of practice I can do it for over a minute or so on each leg which I think will be a great help. I took ballet for 3 years as a child and I think things I learned then have come back to me and helped in the balance department.

There's a study that claims to predict how long you might live depending on whether you can sit down and get up without help. I can do the sit down easily enough but I have to practice the getting up.
