Those are neat, and very reminiscent of a bag I had years ago (*many* years ago). Guess it's true what they say, most everything come back in style sooner or later.

Retro is the new hip :)

I actually wasn't thinking too much about hip, more about function and general "cuteness".

That's um, bright. Still I can see you with that.

If you're looking for a good first knitting project, I recommend making a small mat for your glasses. It's useful (leave on nightstand, high contrast with wood and with glasses--- always know where you left your glasses) and small. A whole scarf is just repetitive. Not that you shouldn't do one, but maybe not for your first project.

When I recommended the knitpicks site to you, it was because they had a whole display of felted crocheted bags. It wasn't pressure to take up knitting.

Oh, trust me, I didn't take it as pressure! It's just that there are more patterns for knit things than crochet, and some of the cutest patterns are for knitting.

My experiments last night went pretty well, I seem to be doing ok on keeping the tension loose enough. I'm not very good at undoing stitches yet though and my first cables looked... odd.

Both cables and undoing stitches are advanced skills. Trying either of them your first time "back on the horse" isn't exactly the best way to feel successful.

Not that either of them are difficult, but they usually require a better mental picture of what normal looks like in comparison.

The best way to get tight knitting is to use smaller needles. If you're tensioning the yarn too tight, the resulting fabric will never lie flat.

Yeah, but once I had even rows of knit and purl stitches I wasn't sure what else to practice :)

that's a fascinating looking purse.

I love the amorphous shape...I'd never find ANYTHING!

It's actually not as amorphous as it looks... the thing is it won't support its own weight, so it is the stuff inside of it that helps fill out the shape a bit.

Oh, maybe you're talking about the first bag... that one does look like a blob... but it was a mistake :) hence why it is now just holding yarn rather than being taken out and showed around. The "real" purse is much more purse shaped.

That's one colorful bag, that is. :) Was it fun to make? I'd probably get too frustrated and would end up with a half-finished bag.

It was fun, and it really didn't take all that long compared to other projects like sweaters and things like that. Probably 48 hours of crocheting tops, maybe less even.

That thing is a riot! I want one. You say you are going to learn to knit; does that mean this is crochet? It's really cool.

Yes, this is crochet... for some reason when I tried to learn to knit and crochet the first time I found crochet easy and intuitive and had problems with knitting. So all I've done for the past 10 years or so since I started doing these things is crochet.

I wish I could direct you to a pattern, but I actually only followed the pattern for the bottom part of the purse, the strap, and the flower. Once I got to the sides of the purse I started decreasing so it would be purse shaped instead of duffel bag shaped like the original design which was open and equal-size all the way up. And the "flap" and hook is all me. I find it easy to "improvise" with crochet, not that it always works but usually will come out approximately what I was going for. I'm really happy with how this one came out.

I have three skeins of purple left over but that's not enough to make another purse with (and I'm nearly out of all 3 contrast colors). I may make another one someday though when this one wears out.
