Significant Dates in History

Yesterday, I discovered I like brussels sprouts. Or, at least I do when teampeeta makes them. I might like them anyway, I don't know. My only other experience was when I was five or six (and thus, already cultured to hate them), my mom promised me I wouldn't have to eat them if I didn't like them (priming me already to dislike), and then making me eat them ( Read more... )

As a parent, I can say that it's gratifying to see my kid enjoy foods that I would rather not eat... and no, I don't mean Froot Loops, I mean healthy stuff like raw tomatoes. It definitely takes effort on my part, though, to try not to prejudice her against foods that I don't like. It's only recently that I've gained confidence that it's ok for me to tell her "no thanks, mommy doesn't like [bananas, etc.]" when she offers to share them with me.

The one area, food-wise, where I think we fall short is that there are certain foods that BOTH nightskyre and I don't like, and those foods, the kiddo has never even seen (like nearly any kind of fish).

Our general policy when she DOES balk is that she just has to try one or two bites. I'm not going to make special food for her, but I'll make sure there is an alternative available when we're eating new food or if we're eating one of the few things I _know_ she doesn't like.

It seems to be working - Heck, she even likes spicy food. :)

Here's my recipe...trimmed halved brussels sprouts + hot pan + nob of butter + once around the pan with real maple syrup. Don't stir for 3-5 full minutes of JUST until the start to release their water. Remove when the first of the leaves start to separate from the halved heads.

Indeed! An overcooked sprout is UN-pleasing.

Some kids will like or dislike whatever, regardless of how it is presented. My parents treated liver as the greatest thing in the world. It's the only food I have reliably not been able to keep down.

My kids are odd in their food likes, in that they have very little crossover in Mutually Enjoyed Hunger-easers (MEH!)

Dan says that brussel sprouts require adult taste buds to really enjoy, because kids will perceive them as too bitter. I similarly didn't like them when I was young, but I do now.
