Find out if your dentist accepts DentalSave.com (they may be familiar with it as Northeast Dental; the name change is recent). I signed up with them while I was on unemployment and without insurance, and they were pretty much a lifesaver. They offer discounts on dental work, and some dentists will let you combine it with your insurance. Some dentists will even let you *stack* it with your insurance, so the discount comes off what you'd pay after insurance. http://www.dentalsave.com/
I feel your pain. If it makes you feel any better I will send you a happy smiling picture of my current mouth-of-horrors state with my #9 completely missing, and believe me when I say I feel you on the hygiene issue. I have perfect teeth, I have never even had a damn filling, and here I am with a freaking tooth out of my head due to circumstance. Terrible.
I feel your pain. I also have 'soft' enamel that is either from eating oranges and drinking lemonade when I was a kid; or it could be genetic.
My grandmother also had soft enamel and lost all her teeth before the age of 30. Though hers could have been from malnutrition; she came from a farming family and grew up in the Depression. All those pics of the poor farming families you see in the Library of Congress collection? Yup, that was sort of like her family.
At least I still have my teeth. Sure I have a ton of fillings and a crown, but hey at least I haven't needed any fake ones.
And if anyone needs a good reference for a dentist in the Dallas, Texas, area who believes in pain meds, and doesn't give you crap; Richard E. Garcia of Contemporary Dentistry. He's on Northwest Highway at Midway Road.
Ugh, I have those same sort of dreams all the time.
Last time I sat in a dentist's chair (which was, uhhh, too long ago, darn lack of insurance) I had to finally get a tooth looked at.
...after 4 months of living with a hole in one of my teeth. Like a sizable, I-can-poke-my-tongue-in-it hole. Admittedly I had somehow chewed through the previous filling which was the problem, so they had to drill out the rest of that filling and now I have honking big metal filling that is so big and dark it looks like I have a rotten black tooth in the back of my mouth.
...that was probably overshare. But I feel your pain. Also, icon solidarity. *fistbump*
I have a dental made mouthguard. No idea how much it cost, we got it when I was on my dad's (federal employee) insurance. I have played around with the over the counter, heat it up make it fit and trim away the excess type and I've concluded that, if you are willing to spend the time trimming and re-heating to get it to fit right, there isn't really any difference, except the over the counter ones cost about $25. Even if it weren't for the sudden need for a root canal and all I would suggest not spending $400 on a product you can get for $25. Admittedly you don't get the nifty plaster form of your lower jaw with the over the counter...
