...Am I the only one who thinks it would be fun to read/write a book about acceptable masculine and feminine behaviors (and the power dynamics/sexual issues) in romance novels? Specifically called Rakes and Hos?
Although I believe there used to be a Very Serious Book that would explain such things so that you could write a viable romance that would sell. One of the things that the poor author said Very Seriously was that your hero should ALWAYS be an alpha male and socially dominant. I don't know if it's sheer perversity, but my current story's male love-interest has a VERY boring job and in a crucial scene defers to my heroine, who is more qualified to deal with things than he is. (I do worry this is Not Commercial, but then I remind myself Pratchett has made a very healthy living writing Not Commercial characters.)
So I would love to read a book that took apart all those dynamics and dissected them for analysis. Good snarky analysis.
I don't know if you're read the Smart Bitches' book, Beyond Heaving Bosoms, but it does address this to some degree and the evolutionary changes that have occurred. Which doesn't mean there's no room for additional books. *I* would certainly read it.
