Keep a short list of NPCs and a trait or mannerism or actor or something to help distinguish them, but don't expect to be able to make each one unique and recognizable based on that alone. We can't all be Dan. I usually try to solve the problem by just stating who is speaking most of the time.

As far as where you sit and whether to move around, that is a matter of personal opinion.

Both Shaughn and I favor the "godfather" approach-- biggest chair in the room/ head of the table/ Jesus seat at the Dinner Table, and you dispense justice/retribution from there.

The first couple of games for the players and the GM are tactile like a bunch of surgeons looking for lump. Especially as we all find our characterizations. Perhaps moving the table a bit more into the center of the room away from the window might be helpful.

IMHO

Sit at the head, if the loud mouths are at the foot, then it balances out. If folks want to chatter IG rather then RP your plot let them. Makes for better party cohesion.

Also, I suggest RPing multiple NPC's with yourself, by yourself. Give yourself a scene, pick the NPC's and RP them enough so you know them cold. It seems silly, it works miracles. You never feel like they lack something or you don't have a feel for them.

Lastly, Find space for me and add me because I make all games better ;) j/k I hope it works out better for you next game but I am sure folks had a good time this time.

I likes to pace! It helps me think! And keeps the crew focused a bit more, I think, because they have to work a bit more to concentrate on you. As it should be.

As far as characters go, I totally agree with previous comments that all you need is a name and a few lines about their major characteristics. One sentence about personality is usually enough to jog my memory. What I think really helps flesh characters out is to have one thing that gets them riled up and are really passionate about, and one thing that really pushes their buttons and pisses them right the fuck off. Nothing makes a character memorable and real like some flipping out over something, in a positive or negative way. ^^

And I agree again that having a conversation between them and a character you know well in your head gets a handle on people real quick. Or people you don't know well - that's a lot of fun and you tend to surprise yourself as to what happens between them.

...assuming you're as schizophrenic as me, anyway ^^;

That's all I got for now. Play on!
