Could everyone reading this please suggest one sci-fi novel (author and title if possible) that I can put on a reading list for someone at work who is looking to expand their horizons a little.

I've put down most of my favourites already, so it'll be good for me too.

Good thing - it takes me about half as long to get to work as it does during term

Bad thing - if I have to go into town at lunch it is filled with thousands of screaming Satan-spawn.
