I'm trying to read WE, by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Trying. I have never gotten along with Russian literature very well; although, I do assign my students Solzhenitsyn every semester, just out of cruelty, I guess. "A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" isn't THAT difficult to get through and analyze, and yet I'm always left telling them that "It's about ( Read more... )

Greetings from a lurker on your flist. I was interested to read this snippet, because I actually live in Rome!

It's certainly true that priests are everywhere, although nuns are more numerous. My friends and I play a game where you get 5 points for every nun you spot - except we don't play when we're at the Vatican, because that's just too easy.

If you ever decide to finish it, feel free to ask me about Rome stuff (if there's anything that Google & Wikipedia can't tell you!)

Oooh, You live in Rome? That must be amazing. Mind if I ask what you're doing there?

If I were ever to finish the fic, I would certainly ask you about the city. I just haven't written any SPN in a while. :)

I tried to read WE once, too, and couldn't finish it. It's the inspiration for 1984 and Brave New World or something, and I'd really loved those two, so I don't know why I couldn't get through WE. D:

It is just a really difficult read. Sigh. I'm supposed to be reading it for a book discussion group. We shall see how that goes. ;)

WE is probably one of my favorite books ever. I read it for the first time in the ninth grade and it took me six months to get through it. The second time it only took a month.
