So 35W over the river (major major N/S freeway) collapsed last night in the tail end of rush hour. Everyone I know how to contact up there is okay, however my family had a too close call with one of my step sisters two cars behind the southbound side collapse ( Read more... )

Crap. I'm really glad she's ok. That IS too close.

There was a spastic flurry of phoning yesterday evening, and lj updates plus having to ask Gabe about IRC (will I ever start using it regularly? will I ever use it? hrm). So far, no bad news in my sphere. Which is qiuite a relief when you consider how many of our friends work at the U. (Fortunately most of them wouldn't go near that damn freeway during rush hour if you paid them. I expect you felt the same way.)

Yeah when I was living in Eagan/Burnsville and commuting up, always tried to avoid 35W for traffic reasons. But when I lived in Minneapolis...I was on that freeway almost everyday.

Far as I can continue to tell, my sphere of friends and family are accounted for, not sure about some of my old CSOM coworkers, though with the UMN closing at 4:30pm, they are likely fine.

The official death count (according to WCCO radio) has now been reduced to 4, but they expect more as they continue the underwater recovery operation.

While I was at the U today for classes I spent some time gawking and taking pictures. Tacky, I suppose, but it seems more real when I see the wreckage (which I really couldn't see much of. You can't really get very close to it - mostly to discourage gawkers like me, I'm sure.

But while I was there I ended up getting interviewed for a Canadian radio station (based in Montreal) because I can speak French. Not very well, mind you, but I can vaguely make myself sort of understood. My interview was a crazy mish-mash of English and French.

I have a couple of business cards of people who would just love to talk to your step-sister. I can pass on the information if you think she would be at all interested in being interviewed, but mostly I took the cards to be polite.
