Yuletide gifts and recs

Dec 26, 2012 20:26

I was lucky enough to receive TWO lovely Yuletide stories this year! Both of them were exactly what I hoped for, and I'm still completely, flailingly happy about them :)

We Go Together (Like) (3657 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Oglaf
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Vanka of Brogoria, Mistertique aka The Clit Tease
Summary:
"I already have a job, thank you very much." "Nuh-uh. What you have is a hobby -- and an annoying one at that."

Vanka and Mistertique have adventures and misadventures and bicker and are hilarious together :D I rather like that they don't pair up in the course of the story - Vanka is far too sensible, and Mistertique far too annoying for that. Theirs is a business relationship - although I do think I detect some promising signs of increasing affection between them by the end.

"On the bright side, if we survive this, I did manage to shove the duchess's carbuncle up my pussy," Vanka said brightly. Mistertique sighed and took a deep breath as the barrel lurched sickeningly and began its downward plunge.

Even Footing (2472 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic
Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Lucas Grayfort, Cadugan
Summary:
Of course Lucas had noticed when Cadugan had stormed out of the feast hall; there just hadn't been anything he could do at the time...

Lucas and Cadugan have a bit of a confrontation, and then almost get caught having hot make-up sex in semi-public. I love how this shows the relationship between them so clearly, tension mingled with affection, and little details like Lucas being a tiny bit scared by the strength of Cadugan's feelings for him (and what he seems willing to give up for him) and his realization that Cadugan would never be pointlessly polite to him, especially not in the middle of sex.

Cadugan quirked an impish smile. “See, that’s your problem. You need to be more misanthropic, and then you won’t have to put up with so much crap.”

“I’ll worry about the people, you can worry about your forest, and that will take care of the important stuff, right?”

“Not just the forest though. Someone has to keep an eye out for you, too. I mean, I hope you don’t think I only drag myself out here for the hot sex.”

Lucas blushed this time - Cadugan had the advantage there, being much less easily embarrassed. Probably living with all those satyrs around helped.

Other recs for stories I really enjoyed, grouped into sort-of-meaningful categories:

Families, Found and Otherwise:
Thicker Than Water (4041 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Wire
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Avon Barksdale/Stringer Bell
Characters: Avon Barksdale, Stringer Bell
Summary:
Avon's only been running for a month, but he knows more about the game than this skinny kid ever will. Somebody has to show him the ropes.

(Pre-series.)

A view of how Avon and Stringer might have met, at age 12, that breaks my heart for both of them, but especially Stringer, and everything he could have been.

Dice for Decimals (4385 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Wire
Rating: Mature
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Stringer Bell/Jimmy McNulty
Characters: Kima Greggs, Cedric Daniels, Rhonda Pearlman, William "Bunk" Moreland, Lester Freamon, Thomas "Herc" Hauk, Stringer Bell, Jimmy McNulty
Summary:
Dr. Russell Bell is a week unshaven, with gold-rimmed glasses and leather-reinforced elbows on his court coat. He's professorial in a broad-shouldered Indiana Jones kind of way; if it weren't for the metal detectors at the entrance to the courthouse, McNulty would swear blind he was packing.

An AU in which Stringer is an economics professor and McNulty takes a class with him at community college, which manages to be mostly canon-compliant and fully in the tone of the show.

I'm reccing these two together because I think they fit with one another perfectly - clearly everyone recognizes that Chime needs love and snuggles. They deal with infertility and poly relationships in sweet and sensitive and touching ways, and both do a great job of capturing the intricacies of Raksura society. Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Candle Cove
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Janice (Candle Cove), The Skin-Taker, Horace Horrible, Pirate Percy

You have to admit, some of those special effects were so scary-looking that you can understand why adults describe a great fondness for the shows of their childhood mixed with an overwhelming feeling of terror. In between discussions of the creepy puppets from "Outerscope" and the Sleestaks, "Candle Cove" comes up again and again.

Takes the original Candle Cove story from its minimal beginnings and builds a lovely long creepy story about a reporter who gets in too deep while he investigates the mysterious show so many people seem to remember...
