Job 13 :: The Departure Job [Audio]

[Ginia's helping herself to a bowl of cereal when there's a meow and a sudden tail tickling her face. Her first inclination is Edna somehow escaped the apartment, but as she pets the cat, she realizes it's a smaller cat and the meows are different. Orenji? Ah, that makes sense, what with his very odd teleporting ways. Gently scooping the cat back ( Read more... )

[Not something Wolfwood expected to hear today. He frowns a bit, wondering if Livio really had anything worth returning to or not. He hoped so. I mean, that's the sad thing about Gunsmoke, or whatever he called his version-most of the time? Anyone who'd come here wouldn't wanna go back.

But he manages to push that all down and speak in a thankful voice,]

... Thanks a lot. I appreciate you telling us; how long has he been gone?

You're welcome. Um... I wouldn't say more than a day, maybe only even hours. I found his cat today, he seems to be okay. Apartment seems fine too.

I see... [Well, whatever fate you go to, he hopes the best for you, Livio. You're a good guy; he owes you one, should he ever get to meet you again.] You two knew each other well?

I... guess so. Neighbors, talked a few times, fought in the draft together, he's a good guy.

Ah, fought in the draft, huh?

[He blinks, thinking on whether or not Livio's been on any other drafts.]

The sea one, right? That's good, to have him around for that. He's definitely a fighter.

That's right. And I agree. Very fast and strong. [An understatement and she knows it; she's felt firsthand how hard Razlo punches as a kid.] A great guy to have on your side.

I take it you two are friends?

Something like that... We're from the same world, different universe. So while he knew me really well, I only just sort of met him here, when he showed up.

I see. All the timelines and alternate worlds, it can be so confusing. But I digress.

Do you mind... do you mind if I ask about your guys' world?

Mm, go ahead and shoot... I don't mind talking about it. [Though his tone suggests you probably won't like his replies.]

What's it like? [After her world and hearing about some of the other worlds out there? Nothing shocks her anymore.]

Hn... [Might as well turn this private, just in case something comes up that is best between two people, a simple conversation.] Well, the first and most obvious thing is that it's a place entirely desert. If you're a fan of sand, Gunsmoke is that sort of place. Doesn't rain. And it's pretty damn hot.

[Ginia considers that, remembering how young Livio had stared at the water and the leaves on the tree when she first saw him by the river.] I see. I guess everyone had to learn how to adapt then?

Mn, that's right. We managed to get underground water out through wells, and... it just goes from there. You'd be surprised, what humankind can adapt to. Still-it was a pretty crazy place to live. No laws, no real idea of peace to speak of. Even if a town was calm, anyone could ride in with a gun and a group of thugs to mess things up.

Sounds like some of the smaller towns in my country. Might have had a sheriff or local group keeping everyone safe, but they were still at the mercy of whoever decide to sweep on in.

I guess that's just a big thing any planet you're on, huh? Bullies abound.

Seems to be a constant across all worlds. The bullies and the people that fight back.
