Life without Sekhmet (My computer), Fatima (my bicycle), the large TV I used to play video games on or much of a social life has left me a little down in the mouth ( Read more... )

A single shot of Whiskey, preferably 15+ years.

A bit of whiskey, but cheaper than thewizard's, and in a bigger glass (but not very full).

I'm with you on this one, most of my scotches are 12 years old or more.

Also I'm a whiskey sipper, I don't do shots with it. I notice neither of you mentioned how you drink it (straight, cut with water, ice)

I'm a bit of a scotch nerd, and you got me started....

Straight or cut with water, room temperature either way.

A few people at work are scotch nerds, so I'll find out more about scotch if I stay in the same section for a while...

If I'm feeling good, Frangelico on the rocks. If I'm feeling bad and want to stay that way, straight-up white rum. If I'm feeling bad and want it to get better and have the stuff (which I usually don't), a mojito or two.

Why have Mojitos become so popular, I tried one when I was in San Francisco a few years ago to find out what all the fuss was about, and I was left unimpressed. It wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to the hype.

Perhaps you make them particularly well? I'd be willing to try them again under favourable conditions...

I don't know why mojitos are suddenly so popular. I made my first one because they got mentioned on Family Guy and I looked it up and it sounded really damn delicious. The ingredients are well-established, but the methodology varies greatly and can easily affect how delicious it ends up being. People seem to either really like mine or are sort of indifferent, even though I always make them the same way; I blame this on lackluster mint.

They are the absolute best drink on a hot summer day, being a lot like a mint julep only with more twang.

These aren't mine, but the two oddest favourite drinks I've come across and actually enjoyed with a shocked look on my face are:

Frangelico and lime juice

Midori and milk

Have I mentioned that we miss you down here?

I've never had Frangelico or Midori knowingly in any capacity. Midori and milk might work from what I know of it, I can't gauge the former.

I miss you guys too. Have more optics conferences in Australia and I'll be able to come!

Ha! You nailed one of mine on your 1st guess. The others are:
  • iced wine
  • pear cider
  • Melbourn Brothers Cherry beer

Figured that you're the type. (^-^)

You certainly have a sweet tooth/liver don't you. I've given ice wine away more than I've actually had it.

I really try not to drink alone. Of the times I can recall, cider is the usual culprit (including once that prompted a nasty flame-war with blueheron).

Near as I can tell your approach to drinking is one that necessitates a group. I'm content to have 1 drink to nurse slowly and relax with. You drink at parties and to party which means you probably shouldn't drink alone because the euphoric high you'll be associating with alcohol won't come in one drink and you'll potentially binge. You also like to do things in extremes (I will now drink like mad!/I will now STOP drinking!)

Of course if you got used to the idea of drinking 'for medicinal purposes', you'd be fine to drink alone, but if you don't enjoy it, why bother?

Too true. Now when I'm alone and need a drink, I seek out others, or go to sleep (video games aren't satisfying at this juncture).
