Autism Awareness and The Discussion

So, it's April again. Everywhere I look there is something about Autism. That's not a bad thing. With diagnostic numbers on the rise (again), there's a big push in getting information out there. That is a very good thing, in my opinion. The only way to counter ignorance is with information and education. It matters. It matters a lot. It hits home

We told Jackson he was autistic at about that same age. It was a hard conversation, and he certainly didn't understand everything about what that meant, but I think it was helpful. It laid the groundwork for talking about and explaining other challenges he's struggled with over the past few years, and -- I hope -- it let us get in ahead of society to plant the message that yes, his brain works in different ways than a lot of people, but that's not a good or bad thing. That's just who he is, and he's awesome.
