Correct. :] Different crops, colors, textures, text, etc. is all allowed. The goal is to make all icons look very different, even though they're all produced from the same picture.
You can also focus on different portions of the image. For example, if you used this image, it'd be fine to icon the girl's face like I did in the example as well as the nurses in the back. It's all in the same image, so it's all fair game. :]
So you could have one icon focus on the girl, one on the nurses, another on the title... and so on. You can virtually do anything, just so long as all five icons come from the same image and they are all obviously different. :]
