My Mom sent me an e-mail today included the line "It would be okay if you wrote to me. Thanks."  Argh!  The last time I e-mailed her was July 17th, and it was a long one.  I write to her when I have something to say.  She gets in these moods of no matter what, she's going to get her feelings hurt.  And poor her that I moved away.  And poor her that

Your right, it's probably best not to respond to her comment. As you said, it's not what you are or aren't doing, it's how she's feeling at the moment. Let the mood pass. And, I'm going to get all philosophical for a moment, it's only possible to feel stifled if you let her. :-) Maybe you should make a list of things you like to do that you know she'd disapprove of and whenever she says something that makes you feel stifled, go out and do one. A sort of reassertion of your independence. :-)
