“So I still don’t know why we’re here at all,” Rodney said out of the corner of his mouth.

“It’s what we doremember?” John hissed back. “Make contact with new civilizations and see if ( Read more... )

I think you're right--this is definitely a topic that needs to be more frequently addressed. I also think that your take on it was just perfect--the tone, the dialogue were spot on. Yay research!

From someone who suffers from a death-inducing carrot allergy (which beats Rodney's citrus allergy for weirdness, IMO) this was great! I especially liked Rodney's ranting about how stupid and hard it is to have a food allergy.

The reference to the trust issues from Trinity was heartbreaking. Great work!

Aww, that must suck. *pats you* But I am glad that I appear to have been realistic with this. (And...wow. More people have death-inducing allergies than I would have thought. Now I'm sad for you all.)

I know its like 2 years after you posted this comment, but I just read this story for the first time and its always interesting for me to run into other people with weird allergies as someone who suffers from a death-inducing allergy to tapioca (also cassava/ manioc), which has the additional cachet of being touted as the "hypoallergenic" alternative to wheat and eggs. They even use it as a binder starch in some pills and vitamins. I loved Rodney's rant too, its so frustrating when even your medicine can kill you, and you never get to eat the ice cream or cake at birthday parties, and even when people do write food allergies, they never bother with that part of it.

hoorah. Being a bit of a coldhearted bitch (*g*) I've been hoping someone writes an 'and back at you too' fic about trust. Perfect characterisations, and I can totally see Sheppard ordering Rodney like that...and I also liked that Rodney called him John at the scariest time...

...said Rodney, and wheezed. “I can’t-breathe-John-”

Would love to see how John gets Rodney's trust back... *hint* *hint* *g*

Ha, the John thing! someone noticed that! I was very careful about placing it. Yay.

As for a sequel...I don't know. A lot of people have been asking for one. Right now, it feels like this ends right here. Maybe sometime later I'll change my mind. ^_^

That was perfect. A great coda to Trinity and Underground both. That meal in Underground was a big "WTF?" moment for me, because really, ordering an allergic to eat unknown food? Well, your story said it better than I could.
I think the Powers That Be are going for the "Rodney is a hypochondriac" explanation, which would also solve the problem of why on earth someone with a deadly food allergy is allowed on off-world missions, but I much prefer the other interpretation, that Rodney's allergy is really deadly, and Shep is just underestimating it because Rodney is such a hypochondriac about anything else.

The trust issue was done really well, too. I got the feeling that part of Rodney's willingness to obey Sheppard's order about the food was that he's still trying to prove himself, and it was a nice twist that it was Sheppard who screwed the situation up.

You left them in a pretty unhappy place, though - is there any chance at all of a sequel?

Dammit, I want Rodney's allergy to be real. *cries*

I got the feeling that part of Rodney's willingness to obey Sheppard's order about the food was that he's still trying to prove himself

You know, I think you're right. Not that I actually *planned* it that way or anything...*g* But it makes sense, doesn't it?

is there any chance at all of a sequel?

Hm. Don't know. Not soon, because I definitely at least need to leave it for awhile. We'll see.
