So, last Sunday, I saw this RV trundling down the Southwest Freeway just outside Downtown, covered in Bible verses, with a message that the end of the world was coming, on May the twentysomethingeth, 2011, and that we should "Read the Scriptures".

Depends on how you define the end. Humans have a very tiny instinctual grasp of time scales, just as we have a very limited instinctual grasp of space scales. If you zoomed out on the solar system so that all the major planets were in view, the sun itself would be a small dot, and Jupiter might show up as a very very very small pinprick. Similarly, a year or ten years or a thousand years are all incredibly short time scales, even compared to just our planet. The planet we live on is a bit more than four and a half billion years old. Life showed up about a billion years after the planet formed. Humans with enough brain matter to start thinking about this kind of thing only came around maybe two hundred thousand years ago, and we've only got written and oral histories from a small fraction of that. Even 5 billion years sounds like a long time, but it's not. Look at this to get an inkling of the scales we're talking about here, keeping in mind this is a logarithmic scale; note the tick marks near the bottom that denote 1 second, 1 hour, ( ... )
