They were ranked based percentage of vote they earned in their prelim (the two characters who automatically moved on were ranked 16 because they didn’t have to fight their way in) and matched up accordingly

Why are we pitting Sanctuary against Star Wars?

Princess Leia was automatically ranked #16 because she didn't have to fight her way out of the prelims. Helen Magnus got the highest percentage of votes in her division for the prelims, so she was ranked #1. In NCAA, the 1st and 16th ranked teams go up each other in the first round (and #2 vs #15, and so on). Similarly, Han Solo was ranked #6 based on percentage and Nikola Tesla was ranked #11 based on percentage, and those rankings go up against each other in the first round.

It was total serendipity that both Star Wars and both Sanctuary characters were put against each other this round.

The same mathematical logic applies to anyone wondering why the two Babylon 5 characters are up against each other and why the two Xena characters are up against each other.
