When you go to bed, leave it on, unplugged every once in a while and let the battery drain all the way down to zero. Then plug it in and charge it back up. This will keep your battery working much longer. It needs to be used, but yeah, it will work fine just plugged in but it's always nice to have the battery as backup.
I actually have 2 external hard drives. I backup my files on Drive A this week, then on Drive B next week, etc etc. This way, I will still have some backup if the laptop AND one of the external hard drive die. Then I backup very important files to a flash drive and put it in a fireproof safety box once a month. So, even if the house burns down, I will still have something to hang on to. I get this paranoid because I have watched the impending death of the hard disk on a desktop and a laptop before. Don't want to be in a panic mode ever again.
I don't think I used that much protection during sex. Heh.
Thanks for the advice. Everything is so expensive. I definitely can't afford an external hard drive, but I'll keep it in mind for later, if/when things get better financially.
