Communication
The couple stood outside the shop holding hands. The man smiled as he pointed to an item in the window display. “So, what do you think? Beautiful isn’t it?”

“Your mobile works fine, Sam. Why do you need a new one?”

“Yes, it works, but this is the cutting edge, Maya! Functionality and style. Longer battery life, stores up to 1000 names and numbers, wireless internet access, and GPS. And best of all it keeps its respectability by not having unnecessary media accessories attached. Honestly, why would I need a camera in my phone?” Sam scoffed.

“I don’t think it’s the phone that should be worrying about its respectability.” Maya tugged Sam away from the window, fearing he was going to press his nose against the glass like a child staring at the shiny new fire engine he wants for Christmas. Though Maya was fairly certain young Sam had preferred a blue panda car.

“Wait a minute, I want to buy it.”

“What, right now?”

“Why not?”

“It just seems rather impulsive…for you.”

“You said something only the other day about me needing to be more impulsive.” With that Sam want in the shop. Maya stayed outside, folded her arms, and leant against the shop’s brick face.

“Yeah, but I meant in the romantic sense,” she muttered to herself, “Surprise dinners, getting up randomly and saying ‘It’s a nice evening for a stroll, don’t you think?’”

“Sam, aren’t you coming to bed?” She asked as provocatively as she could manage.

“In a moment. I still have a few numbers to program in and I haven’t decided on a ring tone.”

He didn’t even look up at her. Though she doubted her sheerest lingerie would compare to the mobile’s sleek black casing and LCD display.

Maya smiled when she finally felt the bed dip beside her. She turned over and instantly her expression changed. Sam’s face was lit by the small blue glow of the mobile’s display.

“Put it away.”

“In a second.” His eyes squinted in concentration.

“Why did you bring it to bed?”

“I’m setting the alarm clock.”

“We already have one.” She picked up the clock from the night stand and waved it in his face.

“I know, but I need to test all the features to make sure they work.”

“Even ones you’ll never use?”

“You never know. And with any thing you buy, you should make sure it’s completely functional.”

“There’s a word for what you are. Interestingly it’s very similar to ’banal’.”

Maya looked up from the report she was typing and gazed across the room to Sam. He was on his mobile and going through some documents on the computer. Well at least at work he could multitask. At the flat when Sam was on his tiny phone he couldn’t even glance at a note Maya passed to him asking if he wanted take-away for dinner.

At least he stopped taking it to bed with him. Maya started thinking she ought to check and see if he kept it on vibrate. Not that she would ever get the chance. He barely kept it off his person, much less out of his sight.

The one time he was out of the room when it rang Maya was about to answer it, but Sam came dashing in the room in his dressing gown and holding a towel. He swiped it right out from under her reaching hand. She didn’t miss the dirty sideways glance he gave her as he turned away from her to take the call.

Maya picked up the phone on her desk and pressed to speed dial for Sam’s office number. It rang a couple times then she saw Sam take the mobile away from his ear, press a button and put it back. “Tyler.”

“Sam, you do know there is a phone on your desk, right?”

“Maya? What are you talking about?”

“They say that using a mobile too much can give you a brain tumor.”

“That’s just a myth.”

“I’m just saying it’s a little ridiculous to see you on a mobile when you are at your desk, which by the way is stationary.”

“If I leave my desk I have to have calls rerouted to my mobile anyway. Less of a hassle this way.” He finally turned around a looked at Maya. Having to lean back in his chair a little to see past the officers. “And if you don’t like me on the phone all the time, why did you call me to say so?”

“Because I can never seem to get a word in unless I do call you!”

“You’re being silly. Now can I please go back to my other call which is actually important to my job?”

He did so before waiting for a response. Maya first stared at the receiver in disgust, then looked over at Sam again. She stuck her tongue out at him. He didn’t see it since his back was turned. DS Patterson saw it though as she walked by at that very moment. She raised her eyebrows at Maya. “Troubles in paradise?”

Maya sighed, feeling foolish now. “It’s nothing really. It’s lately Sam seems to be more interested in his mobile than in me.”

“I’ve seen it, and it is a nice phone.” She held up her hands in defense at Maya’s glare. “Hey, just joking. If it really bothers you that much you could always ‘accidentally’ break it.”

“Yeah, then he would break up with me and just buy himself a new mobile. Either way, I lose.”

Patterson laughed and patted her on the shoulder. “You know boys and their toys. Soon enough it will stop being so shiny and it’ll just be another modern convenience. My Colin bought a plasma television a couple months back. Had it on 24 hours a day, constantly pressing every button on the remote, trying every feature and setting. Now we only watch a couple shows a week.” With a reassuring smile she walked away.

She was probably right. But Maya kept having an uneasy feeling that the last words Sam was ever going to hear from her were going to be through that mobile.
