Okay, so the most interesting part about the Diana Gabaldon freak-out over fanfiction is the fact that some people actually commented on her blog saying that they'd never even heard about fanfiction before. Jesus, really?! Where the hell have you been living these past few years? My 58 year old mother, who doesn't even know what The X-Files is, ( Read more... )

I hate hate hate authors who think that fanfiction is horrible, and is stealing their characters, blah blah blah. It's ridiculous, and it just makes their fans start to hate them. Fanfic is such a labor of intense love for a given work, I find it disgusting that authors regard it as something to look down upon. I've been in the fandom for so long, and read so many amazing fanfics (some that were ever better than the original stories, truth be told), that to think fanfic is some lower form of writing is ridiculous ( ... )

Oh rant away. I have absolutely no problem with it.

There's one part of her post that goes "While not all fan-fic is pornographic by any means, enough of it _is_ that it constitutes an aesthetic argument against the whole notion."

Eh, what? To use it as an argument against the whole notion of fanfiction, wouldn't you have to be implying that most fanfiction is pornographic? And what exactly constitutes as pornographic? She doesn't really go on to specify except to say that sex scenes and slash are attention catching and that maybe that is why ff authors use them, so I don't know if that is what she identifies with pornography. That's a pretty broad description of pornography. You could pretty much label anything pornography just because it involved a sex scene. You could even, dare I say it, call one of her books pornography because as I recall, there were pretty graphic descriptions of teh sex somewhere in there. *eyeroll forever*

I still would've thought that if you were a big enough fan of an author to check their personal blog, that you would at least be aware of what fanfiction is. That's not to say that I think you have to be into fanfiction to be a fan, but it's a term that gets thrown out a lot, so I thought more people would know what it is.

Although I think that more than the not knowing what it is--which, okay, maybe it's not something everyone is gonna know about-- what's annoying to me is that some people are criticizing it without even knowing what it is.

Diana Gabaldon is an idiot. And her books are horrible anyway. (Sorry for the strongly-worded response, that's just my opinion:)

I really hate it when authors get on their high horse and decide to just be total assholes to their fans. It's one thing to have an opinion about fanfiction. It's quite another to voice that opinion by insulting your fans. That's just rude.

There's a lot of pearl-clutching going on, which is hilarious considering how graphic her books can get.

Authors/creators should be flattered that people love their work so much as to create stories about them.

Ikr? I would be ecstatic if something I created spawned fanfiction.

There's this one part in the post where she compares people writing ff about her characters to people writing ff about her daughter and neighbor and I nearly fell off my chair laughing because you know that's gonna bite her in the ass. RULE 34, Gabaldon.

You're totally gonna laugh at me but I read the first Outlander book when I was around 14 and I totally loved it. Of course I also thought the Dark Hunter books were a work of art so...that should put it into perspective. Mostly, I just really liked the sex scenes so I don't know why she's so angry about sex in fanfiction.

Don't forget that they're also lazy because they couldn't work up the effort to make up their own characters. Ironic considering that Jamie from the books is supposed to be based off a Doctor Who character. Yum. I love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning.

Exactly, that's why I'm planning on selling a book about a boy who was orphaned at birth only to discover when he's ten that he's actually a wizard. I'll name him Larry Dotter AND MAKE MILLIONS.
