I read about that. Judging from what little I can see of Gorey's designs in google image search, they were far more minimalist than what was made for the movie. It's a real shame they couldn't, or didn't want to, use Gorey's designs. The movie's abbey, in particular, is fun in a decadently cheesy way (convenient Dracula picked the place with a massive bat head in the great hall), but it would've been nice to have a good film record of Gorey's designs in use.
