Death Note really did have a satisfyingly complete ending. The manga was pretty much the same, there just wasn't the quiet before his death. I like how in the anime they put that in, and it shows just how far Light wandered from his original character.
HOWEVER! I did hear about an alternate ending in the manga, where he doesn't necessarily go into nothing, but has to serve the punishment for using the Death Note. (Read the following paragraph if you're interested.)
His punishment is to experience every death he ever put anyone to, which will take a really long time. He starts out by screaming in agony, but then regains his composure, and insists on seeing the head of the Shinigami and requests to be made into a shinigami. I can't remember whether he's granted it or not. Also, I am not sure of the source my friend of a friend got this from, but she made it sound credible.
