Mini- Rant

I'm not going to apologise for being angry, only for being slightly less articulate about it than normal.

Who the Fuck is this woman in the Avengers trailers?
Why the Fuck has she not had A SINGLE LINE YET, let alone a whole movie setting her up, like the rest of the gang?
and
Why the Fuck is there only one of her, while I can count at least 5 blokes ( Read more... )

headasplode, fetch me my pen of rage!!!, do not taunt happy fun alex, quietly breaking heart, postcards from the dcu, wtf?

Marvel "used" to be great for some degree of representation. Rogue was a much much better character before the movies/cartoon series got to her. Mystique was practically god in regards to plot devices - Need a mysterious parent? Mystique, Who tried to have me killed? - Mystique. Who was on the grassy knoll? Not Mystique because she was actually Jackie Onasis with the hypodermic syringe next to JFK. I'll agree that a lot of characters were introduced as girlfriends - but marvel was the publisher who broke the mould by making those relationships integral to the story. Wolverine/Mariko for example ( ... )

Are you talking about the character played by Scarlett Johansson? She's got quite a part in Iron Man 2, so I'm not sure what you mean by her not having spoken a single line. Also, Hawkeye didn't get his own movie pre-Avengers and said a lot less in Thor than Black Widow did in Iron Man 2...

Oh is *that* who she is? I had no idea.
And her not having spoken a single line refers to in the Avengers trailers. Probably hence my not recognising who the hell she was...

I still think there should be more women super-heroes out there though, and I really wish they'd give the ones they've got some more screen-time, character, plot, etc. I hate feeling like we've been relegated to support status all the time.

I agree with the whole lack of women super-heroes thing btw. Just thought you might have missed that it was Black Widow!

Hah, well you've caught me in the middle of writing my dissertation (on the representation of women in comics) so I'm not going to go into too much detail, but DC is very guilty of a lot of things as regards to it's female characters, though which one's get picked up for movies is mostly out of their hands.

That said I'd love a good Wondy movie too, though I know I'd be disappointed.

I started one of those, on much the same subject, so I totally get where you're coming from there.

Really want to see a WW movie - possibly we should persuade Gail Simone to write one...

Heh, really? Small world. :)

And ooh yes, that would be good... that or the current writer. Thing is, even with an amazing script the imagery would almost definitely be really objectifying, and the studio would probably botch the script too. =/
