I loved it... very realistic portrayal of all 3 guys. Most people forget that Sammy, like all little boys, would have LOVED his daddy and was probably hell with floppy hell, and you nailed it!
I hate it when fanfiction writers portray Dean as the primary caregiver and that John couldn't be bothered. He was four. There was no way Dean cared for Sam by himself. So, I'm glad you appreciate the dynamic between the Winchester men.
you are my hero for saying that.... nothing is better than knowing creative writers catch on to the fact that Dean was a great kid, but he was just a lil boy & unless he was channeling Mary Poppins....John was the one wiping noses, cleaning puke out of the Impala, changing diapers and tying shoes.
Totally random, you even inspired me to make a grilled cheese sandwich after reading it!
You are my hero for agreeing with me! Very few people do. A lot of writers out there also don't comprehend the relationships. I'm sure Dean was a fantastic kid who helped take care of his brother. That's a given. Dean taking care of his baby brother all by himself? I can see that for a couple hours. Dean taking care of his brother for days? Not possible until he was at least 15/16 years old.
Grilled cheese sandwiches are quite scrumptious. Go get one.
I just posted about Sam's early hero worship in wee_chesters as part of my Monday Meta series.
Interestingly, I got raked a bit for saying that "Something Wicked" depicted a rare occurrence for John to leave them completely alone for three days - I came to revise my stated opinion there based on re-watching the episode and some of the other comments (like Dean's speech from AHBLII). But there had to be a first time, right? And whatever that first time was couldn't have been *too* much sooner than SW, even if by SW they've done this a million times.
I'm also glad to see someone else twigging to the fact that as much as Sam idolized Dean, Dad was *DAD* and no one else could hold a candle.
I hate when fans portray John as a father who left his kids alone without so much as caring. I also hate when fans think that a five-year-old Dean cared for his baby brother solely by himself for days on end

I think it's more than possible to avoid fanfiction that demonizes (no pun intended) John... I don't, for example, and I know there's a whole new community the_backroads, which is all about John and specifically doesn't allow abusive/neglectful John fics. Dodger_winslow, ficwriter1966, eloisebright - there's a bunch of good authors who balance the John who really did feel he had to leave them alone with the John who also desperately wanted to get back to them

I think The Backroads is quickly becoming my favorite John site. It is wonderful to read a fic regarding all three Winchesters, and see what I consider a much more realistic depiction of their early years. John struggling with not wanting to leave his kids, yet not wanting more people to die if he can stop it. He still is Dad, the primary caregiver, and Dean is still a kid in John's eyes. He just doesn't assume that this is all easy for Dean to handle and walk out the door. Sam, I can see as being a bit of a terror, but not at all a bratty kid. Nicely done.:)

I like the reasoning you use here with regard to John leaving the boys, and how that progressed over the years. Nice job.
