Sam did talk about how John drank. I like to believe he only drank after a partically hard hunt. I never pictured him abusing alcohol. Plus, what we've seen, Dean drinks quite a bit but doesn't get drunk. We've also seen John hunting but never showed him drinking on the job. I see him as drinking when things get too tough, when it's too hard to go on.
I think John probably did become a drill sergeant when the boys were older. When they became teenagers, John probably saw that they could take care of themselves without him having to take care of them all the time. I can picture him barking orders in order to help his children better defend themselves. I don't believe for a second he was a drill sergeant-esque when the boys were younger. Plus, I don't see a negative connatation when using the word drill sergeant. i don't know.
I don't mind reading slash. I don't, however, like wincest. There's a limit that I can be accepting towards things, and incest is just... I can't read it. I have read some great AU ones where they're not brothers that I enjoyed. I generally just try to stay away from it though.
It seems like almost all of the fandom is either wincest or abusive John. It's very hard to find the good authors. Thanks for the recs by the way. I'll have to check them out.
