World of Cradle Robbers

My mother handed me my copy of Rolling Stones (I don't pay for it, I went to a concert last year and now I have a subscription?) and right there on the front cover, with a air machine and the half-open mouths and everything: The Jonas Brothers.
I gasped and immediately showed it to my mother. Her reaction was exactly what I couldn't bring myself to ( Read more... )

the oldest is 20. the middle is like 18 and the youngest is 15. He's cute. the other ones not so much.

I read that article in the library. where did it say that they make sex objects out of women? I thought the whole purity ring was to remind them not to do that.

"And they say they make sex objects out of women."

"...where did it say that they make sex objects out of women?"

You misread that in a couple of ways. The sentence is not declaring something literally, nor do either "they" refer to a concrete subject. The structure indicates that the Jonas Brothers are the sex objects, not any women. Otherwise the context doesn't relate. Learn to read.

Let's put it another way.

"They say Twain was racist." This is a simple declarative sentence, but "they" is not a concrete subject since it refers to no one in particular.

"And they say Twain was racist." "They" is again not a concrete subject, but the addition of "and" can change the meaning to "someone is more racist than Twain" or "Twain was not racist (compared to whomever is being discussed)."

Notice this basic formula applied to the matter at hand: "And they say they make sex objects out of women." or, "And they say [society] makes sex objects out of women." Now put more literally and contextually:

"Looking at the Jonas Brothers pictures, they seem to be even greater sex objects than women," or "Women don't seem so much like sex objects compared to the Jonas Brothers in those pictures."
