I prefer the 1/2" bones, as they are more than twice as stiff as two 1/4" bones. But I like a 1/4" one up the back between the lacing holes and the open edge. You aren't going to snap the 1/4" ones, by any stretch of the imagination, but they won't make as stiff a conical shape.

How did you pleat the overskirt to make it hang open properly? That's a problem I had with my most recent gown and I gave up and cut the opening on an angle, which meant that the edges, once hemmed, ripple. I'm going to have to go back and add a stiffened edge to them, probably out of tarleton ribbon (I have lots of that).

Nothing revolutionary. I did it based on my interpretation of this: http://www.uvm.edu/~hag/sca/tudor/backsketch.jpg Now my interpretation could be wrong but this is what I did

center back 4 inch box pleat 2-2inch knife pleats on either side the rest of the skirt is flat. Maybe it is a complete fluke that it worked but it really worked well.
