It sounds like "Between" by Ariana Lussier. It doesn't seem to be anywhere online anymore but I have it on my hard drive if you'd like me to email you a copy.

I can't remember how to get this one on the net - I seem to recall somebody commenting on a prob with the website, but I have it on my pc and can mail it to you if you'd like.

Thank you thank you thank you! I thought it was going to be one of those "on the tip of my tongue and bugging me to no end" days. Thanks too for the generous offers to email me the story, the linked worked though so I'm covered and now it's resting comfortably on my hard drive !
