As a goth, I can officially say black lipstick is an absolute pain. It stays in place for about five minutes before you need to speak, drink or move to, say, breathe, for example. Then you get a pink and grey punched-in-the-face foaming-at-the-mouth sort of look, except not as pretty as it sounds.
Although it's not really my area, black seems like such a dead end for lippy - given how many shades of (for example) dark purple and magenta there are out there.
Put on one coat, then blot your lips with powder; put on another coat, then top with a gloss (I like a deep dark red or purple). Top up the gloss throughout the night and you'll be good - your friendly neighborhood old skool goth.
There was girl in the library this afternoon who looked as if she'd gone down the paint aisle of B&Q, and dipped a fingertip in each pot as she went along. Bizarre.

I used to wear yellow and blue lipstick in Jr. high and I loved it - and I too got comments about looking dead. Which I also enjoyed.
That reminds me, I was going to do my nails. Think I'll do black. ;-)
