Chapter 19

The second Shako heard the news she collapsed onto the floor, the phone dropping from her hands.

“Shako? Shako!” Shako’s mother was calling over the phone but Shako had already left her apartment. It was pouring outside as Shako just ran blindly in the rain, getting soaked from head to toe. She didn’t have a jacket or an umbrella but she needed to find Daiki. She knew Daiki was at home and she headed in that direction. After only being there once, she didn’t know the way and was lost. Shako stumbled upon a nearby park where she sat down on the swings crying; her tearing mixing with the rain. “Jii-chan why?”

Daiki was walking over to Shako’s house with a bouquet of flowers. He thought that he would surprise her. When Daiki reached Shako’s apartment, he rang the doorbell and no one answered. He tried to knock but there was still no answer. He tried the door and it opened. She left the door unlocked. Daiki walked into the room and saw the phone on the ground. He placed the bouquet of flowers onto Shako’s kitchen table, grabbed his umbrella and ran out the door. He had no idea where Shako would be so he ran to places like his special place, Shako’s favourite café, Shako’s school and her friends’ houses. No one had seen Shako. The rain was starting to fall more and it was becoming harder to run.

Daiki was going to run home to see if Shako had gone to his place. Thankfully, he saw Shako sitting on a swing in the park by his house.

“Shako!” he ran towards her and saw that her eyes were red and puffy. She was sobbing uncontrollably and barely noticed that Daiki was running towards her. He held the umbrella he was holding above Shako’s head to protect her from the rain but she was already soaked.

“What’s wrong Shako?” he placed his hand on his shoulder.

“Jii-chan….he…died…this morning….” She said in between her sobs. Daiki dropped his umbrella out of shock. They were both attacked by the rain once more. Both of them were close to the old man yet Shako was even closer. Daiki could understand why she was so hurt. He wrapped his arms around Shako, consoling her.

“Shhhh It’s alright Shako. It’s the circle of life. Plus, I don’t think your grandfather would want to see you this way. Saa… you can’t stay outside, you’re going to catch a cold. Come, we’ll go to my house.” Daiki helped Shako up and they walked to Daiki’s.

She was still crying on the way there. When they walked through the front door, Daiki pushed Shako up the stairs and into the washroom.

“Go take a shower I’ll put some clothes in front of the door later. You’re going to have to borrow some of my clothes though while yours dry.” Shako simply nodded and walked into the washroom.

When they both finished drying off, Shako and Daiki were sitting on the living room couch. Shako was wearing one of Daiki’s t-shits and a pair of his shorts. The shorts were a little too long to be shorts on Shako, and the t-shirt was over sized. Daiki had his arms around her and was stroking her hair. She stopped crying not because she was over her grandfather’s death, but because she couldn’t cry anymore. It was like her tears dried up.

“When’s his funeral?” Daiki asked.

“This weekend.”

“Are you going?”

“I don’t know. He’s really close to me. If I can make it to Osaka in time, then I’ll go. Dai-chan…can you come with me?”

“Of course Shako! You don’t even need to ask! I’m here for you.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daiki was beside Shako every minute of every day during the funeral and even after it. He didn’t know what to do. Fearing that Shako could break at any minute, he practically camped at her house. It took Shako a few days before she could start going outside again. She started to cheer up slowly. Just like the time where Shako was almost raped by Akira, she got over the whole situation quickly only because Daiki was with her. He was her support.
“How about this one?” Daiki showed Shako a picture frame that was mahogany coloured. They were shopping, finding things to make a shrine in Shako’s home for her grandfather.
“Un! I’m sure Jii-chan will like it,” she smiled.
“Jaa… let’s get it then!” he put it into the basket on his arm.
“Nee Dai-chan, I want to go get some notebooks and pencils, I’ll be right back!” Shako was going into her last year of high school and needed school supplies.
“Okay! Meet me at the checkout counter then!”
Shako and Daiki went back to Shako’s apartment after shopping. They were about to use the elevator when they saw a sign that said “elevator not in service”
“Stairs?” Shako asked.
“I guess so” Daiki answered.
They were climbing up the stairs with their bags. Shako was hopping on the stairs when she slipped and fell down. She tumbled down the stairs. There was a thud, then a scream of pain.
