Chapter 18
Dai-chan, help me.
As Akira undid he last button on Shako’s blouse, the door was kicked open. It was Daiki.
“Shako!” he ran to Akira and punched him directly in the nose. Even though Daiki was short, his hits packed a punch. Akira stumbled over onto the floor his nose bleeding. Shako could see Hikaru, Inoo and Yabu run into the room and drag Akira out. They would make sure he was fine. Daiki carefully pulled the tape off of Shako’s mouth and untied her arms. When he looked back up at her, she had a lost look in her eyes. Shako’s vision was becoming blurry and suddenly, all she could see was darkness.
“Shako!”

Shako opened her eyes and saw..the ceiling? Where was she? The brightness of the light in the room was hurting her eyes but she still managed to open them fully. Shako sat up on the bed and looked around. She saw Daiki at the bedside sleeping on his folded arms; her hand in his. When Shako sat up, Daiki felt the bed moving and so he woke up.
“Shako are you alright?!” he was so desperate to know what happened that he grabbed Shako by the shoulders.
“KYAAA! GET AWAY FROM ME!” Shako screamed and pushed Daiki away. She hugged herself shivering. Daiki realized that she was traumatized. Akira was drunk. He tried to rape her. What girl wouldn’t be scared? Daiki suddenly realized that he broke his promise.
I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise.
He needed to make things right.
“Shako…look at me.” He didn’t want to touch her, fearing that she would just break down. “I’m sorry. I promised that I wouldn’t let anything happen to you and yet this happened. I’m sorry.” He hid his eyes under his bangs. “I’m sorry Shako” He looked up and her. She was trying to stop her tears. “Shako…” Daiki carefully placed his arms around his terrified girlfriend. When she didn’t flinch at the movement, he wrapped them around her shoulders and pulled her close to him. “If you want to cry, it’s okay. I’m here for you.” Shako turned around and buried her face into Daiki’s shirt, wetting the front of it with tears. All Daiki could do was sit there patting her back in comfort.

Amazingly, Shako got over her terrible experience within a matter of minutes. It was probably because Daiki was by her side for the whole night. Daiki told Shako that they were could stay for the night in Yabu’s room because he was going to watch over Akira. They spent the time talking.
“How’d you find me Dai-chan?” Shako said quietly. Daiki was leaning against the wall and Shako was lying against him.
“It’s a long story…” Daiki got ready to explain.

~Flashback~
Daiki returned to where Shako was sitting holding two glasses.
“Eh? Shako? Where are you?” Daiki placed the glasses onto a nearby table and walked around the room looking for his girlfriend. He saw one of his classmates.
“Makoto-kun have you seen Shako?” He had introduced her to him earlier that night.
“No I haven’t…Sorry” Daiki ran to another familiar face.
“Kamiki-kun have you seen Shako?” he was desperate for an answer.
“Yea… I just saw her with Akira. They left. He was carrying her on his shoulder. It was funny. He didn’t look so great. Swaying and everything. I bet he got drunk.” He was laughing without realizing the direness of the situation.
“What? Carrying her? DRUNK?” Daiki knew exactly where they’d be. Akira’s room. Daiki whipped out his cellphone. “Moshi moshi? Hikaru? You’re with Yabu and Inoo right?....Yeah I need you guys. Akira’s drunk and he’s gone off somewhere with Shako. I bet he’s gone to his room with her. This could be bad.” Daiki was running at top speed towards Akira’s dorm. He didn’t even bother to say ‘good-bye’ and just hung up his phone without waiting for a reply.
Hikaru, Inoo and Yabu arrived to the dorm room a second after Daiki did. By then, Daiki had already kicked in the door.

“Ah…so that’s what happened…Thanks for protecting me Dai-chan. I had fun tonight you know? Well…except for that…incident.”
“No. This wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t leave you alone. I’m so sorry Shako.” He was beating himself up over the matter.
“Dai-chan, it was inevitable. You left to get drinks. Don’t worry about it. Plus….if you weren’t there to save me Kai-san could have….” She shivered at the thought. Daiki pulled her even closer and hugged her.
“I would never forgive myself if anything worse happened.”
“You’re being too hard on yourself Dai-chan. You saved me, and now we’re together. Isn’t that… all that matters… right now?” Shako’s eyes were starting to droop and she was falling asleep. “I love you Dai-chan” she murmured as she fell asleep.
“I love you too Shako” Daiki moved Shako under Yabu’s covers into a more comfortable position to sleep. He lay now next to her and watched her calm, sleeping face until he too fell asleep.

Shako and Daiki were sitting on the train a week later heading to Osaka. She had long gone gotten over her horrible experience at the university party and was now back to her usual, energetic self.
“Nee, Dai-chan you look nervous. Don’t worry about it. Jii-chan and Baa-chan* will be so happy to meet you,” Shako reassured. Daiki and Shako were going to Shako’s grandfather’s house for his 90th birthday. It wasn’t everyday that one turns 90 and so there was a huge celebration. Shako’s parents travelled separately and had gone to Osaka the day before.
“I’m not worried about that….okay maybe I am…but I’m more worried about your mom attacking me again,” he said shyly.
“Oh yeah…we’re going out now… I never thought about that…Ma, it’s okay she wouldn’t hurt you…that much?”
“SHAKO!” Shako only giggled. “Wait…is this the ojii-san you were talking about…with the whole horror stories thing?” Daiki asked and Shako nodded. Daiki was starting to feel even more nervous.

“Jii-chan! Baa-chan!” Shako stepped into the house carrying her bags. The house was an old style Japanese home and had the familiar scent of cinnamon. Shako’s grandmother always made cinnamon cookies so the air was always filled with the smell.
No one answered to Shako’s call. “Okaa-san! Otou-san!” she tried calling for her parents.
“Shako, we’re outside!” Shako heard her mom calling from the backdoor.
“Hai~” she answered, “Dai-chan come inside, no need to be scared. You’re like family anyway. Gosh, Okaa-san will be so glad to see you…and Otou-san will probably kill me…Brace yourself Dai-chan~”
He walked into the house with a weak smile. “I thought you said this wasn’t going to be so bad.”
“I did. And it won’t. Hayaku* they’re waiting for us.” She grabbed Daiki’s hand and intertwined their fingers with a large smile on her face.

They walked into the garden and saw Shako’s family. The four elders were sitting, drinking tea. Shako and Daiki were holding hands and everyone immediately noticed this.
“Shako! Okaeri~ Are? Holding hands? Could it be? ARIOKA-KUN’S YOUR BOYFRIEND?!?!” Shako’s mother jumped up and down squealing.
“OKAA-SAN!” Shako screamed.
“It’s nice to meet you again Takahashi-san,” he bowed to both Shako’s mother, and her father who walked up to meet Shako.
“I can’t believe you’re going out! It makes me so happy! You’ve made momma proud Shako! Kyaa~” she was still freaking out and she grabbed Shako into a choking hug.
“I hope you haven’t been doing anything I wouldn’t be happy about…” Shako’s father warned. They both blushed.
“OTOU-SAN!” This was getting annoying
“Nee Arioka-kun, is it okay if I call you Daiki-kun?” Shako’s mom asked.
“Um…sure…”
“Yay! You can call me Oba-san, no need to be so formal. Okaa-san is fine too.” She was being too forward and hinting at things she shouldn’t have been.
“Ah..hai!” he was feeling cornered.
“Maa maa Yuuko, stop scaring our guests,” Shako’s grandpa stood up and placed a hand over his daughter’s shoulder. “Don’t worry about her young man. She’s being too forward. Shako how are you? I haven’t seen you in so long! Nee, I just got another movie. ‘The Living Dead’ Do you want to watch it with me tonight Shako?”
“IIYA*! JII-CHAN!” she ran and hide behind Daiki, “You KNOW I hate scary things!” Everyone laughed.
“Saa, Shako, Yuuko let’s go make dinner.” Shako’s grandmother stood up and led her daughter and granddaughter to the kitchen. ‘
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Itadakimasu!*” everyone said before digging into the food.
“Umai*!” Shako’s father said when he ate. “Shako, you’re getting better at cooking!”
“Shako, I never knew you cooked…” Daiki said quietly, but everyone heard him. They all burst out laughing, while Shako only pouted.
“Of course I cook Dai-chan. How do you think I survive living alone?” she asked.
“Nee, Daiki-kun, did you know Shako had a streaking problem when she was younger?” Shako’s mom was whispering loudly to Daiki, “she used to run around naked singing in the house. It took so much to get her to put back on her clothes.” She started giggling to herself. Daiki laughed as well and Shako turned bright red.
“OKAA-SAN!!!!! YAMETE*!!”
“It’s okay Shako. Daiki-kun should know about when you were little anyway~ Nee~ Daiki-kun?”
Daiki didn’t like being put on the spot. He shoved some rice in his mouth in order to avoid answering.
“And did you know Daiki-kun? Shako has a heart shaped birthmark on her bum? It’s so cute!” As if her previous story wasn’t bad enough.
This time Shako choked on her food and grabbed her juice to help her swallow. Shako’s grandfather was patting her on the back as she did so. “Now, now Yuuko, let’s not embarrass Shako any more in front of her boyfriend.” He winked at Shako who mouthed “arigatou~” to him. The topic changed and everyone finished dinner. Daiki even had a chance to chat with Shako’s grandfather. Shako watched them with a smile on her face.
“Okaa-san, I’ll wash the dishes,” she said as she started to pick up the empty plates.
“Arigatou Shako~”
“I’ll help you Shako,” Daiki said as he got up and followed Shako into the kitchen.
“You’re family’s nice nee. My parents used to be home all the time…but lately I haven’t seen them much.”
“Nanisunda* Dai-chan? Don’t get all depressed on me!” She took a handful of bubbles and blew them at Daiki.
“O-oi! Shako! You’re going to make a mess!” Daiki swatted away the bubbles and Shako just giggled. They got back to work.
“Dai-chan….what do you think of jii-chan?” she saw Daiki laughing and talking with her grandfather.
“He tells a lot of good stories. It’s fun to talk to him,” Daiki answered. “It feels like he’s my grandfather too.”
“Yokata~Jii-chan and I are really close nee? He took care of me a lot when I was younger. It’s nice that you can be close with him too!” she was grinning ear to ear.
The time Shako and Daiki spent in Osaka went by quickly as it was filled with celebration. Shako’s grandfather’s birthday passed and Daiki managed to meet many of Shako’s relatives during his party. He spent a lot of time with Shako’s grandfather as he had taken a liking to Daiki. They managed to get home a few days later and were back to their everyday lives.
