The universal complaint I have had about The Consumerist for several years now has been, in brief, that they encourage people to be monstrous fucking assholes to customer service and retail employees because they can get away with it. Phil wrote that. Phil is...not really the best (frankly, the worst) writer on staff. He sensationalizes, doesn't fact check, etc. He's not really indicative of the general site.
I don't get the sense that they encourage people to be assholes to CSRs - at least, not unless they start being an asshole first. Even in that article they aren't saying "do this" they're making reference to the material in question, and then asking which works better. The comments tend to reflect the general direction of the site too - they wouldn't be calling out the author of the "be a jerk" if the site was like that all the time.
Hell, most of the stories they run are about incompetent corporations and/or CSRs and people being at the end of their rope with it.
