there are few things more distracting, where voices are concerned, than when you find yourself talking to a canadian who used to have a canadian accent (as you'd expect), but who went away and lived in, say, ireland for 6-12 months and SOMEHOW managed to come back sounding (inconsistently) irish. and has kept the strange, semi-accent long after ( ( Read more... )

There is a curator at my museum who is from the very mid-western uncultured (except where cheese is concerned) state of Wisconsin who, after a year of study abroad in the Netherlands when he was a young college student, managed to aquire a terribly affected accent that has followed him into what I would guess to be his late 50s.

I like very much to make fun of him.

Oh, I don't know, Wisconsin has The House on the Rock, Culver's (or whatever that place that sells butter burgers is called), styrofoam cheese-shaped hats, lots of lawn ornaments and the world's largest beer bottles (? cans?) - how can you call it uncultured?! For shame!

But anyway, with few exceptions it seems like being a curator requires that you a) take yourself very seriously and therefore have pretty much no sense of humour and b) are exTREMELY pretentious/strangely accented (especially if art's involved). What a bore! I like to see how much outright mockery I can get away with where they're concerned; it's amazing what a smile can do.

omigod, i know! i knew people who went to england for less than that amount of time and would insist on using the words dodgy, flat, and jumper. i understand using these words (and even using the accent subconsciously just to adapt), but when you're back here, there's no reason someone should keep that crap up unless you're trying to remind everyone where you've been.

do people care? i certainly don't! ha!

and jeez, i didn't realize you lived in toronto! we should meet up at a show or SOMETHING... when i finally get paid after three months of travelling and no work!

i totally agree about the expressions/accent. obviously. occasionally i accidentally use "car park" or.. i dunno. but... SERIOUSLY!
