I figure the perceptions of race for a lot of the students doesn't line up exactly with these ignorant asshats perceptions are.

how can anyone so well-educated and so "aware" in some areas be so stupid?

Because these people pat themselves on the back for being ~*~SO AWARE~*~ of some things without actually knowing what the fuck they're talking about.

I do that from time to time. I admit it. But it isn't like I don't do whatever I need to bust out of that bubble. I learned some interesting things about the trans community from F_W recently (imagine that) that really opened my eyes to a lot of my cissexual privilege.

I'm glad you're enjoying this experience and can't wait to hear all of the crazy stories you and fatema will have when you guys come back to the States.

no one can know about everything and i think the key is to realize it and own up to it and be open to being made aware of it. (link me to this wankery! i could use some educational gossip!)

the coworkers in question are two people that i am completely fed up with after the past few months because not only are they unaware of the depth of racial/cultural issues that surround them, but they are constantly griping about how this place is stupid and so it's not worth learning about. that kind of unwillingness to open your eyes? just pisses me off. i mean honestly, why the fuck are they here??

i wish i had the time/energy to write more while i was here because there's so much that i just won't be able to recount properly once it's over but i'm kind of also really appreciating living in the moment. BUT I MISS YOU GUYS. EXPECT ME TO STALK YOU WHEN I AM BACK!!

yeah, it's not even that Americans think racism is the biggest issue, it's also that these particular Americans' concept of "the race issue" is so limited and, well, black and white. the "race issue" in this region, that is most familiar to these students, is a different perspective entirely than that of the liberal-arts-educated-white-person. i feel that it's their failing to not realize that it is just as valid to approach the issue from this different direction--and possibly learn something from their students for a change! be open to and respect new sources of knowledge!!
