Oh, for God's sake

My inner mule balking at assumed wisdom, fannish consensus and my inner rooter for the fannish underdog kicked in with a vengeance yesterday. You know, I hadn't looked forward to the planned Superman & Batman film, since I had severe ideological and storytelling problems with Man of Steel, though I liked the cast, and basically thought The Dark Read more... )

Yeah, the extreme reaction of some to it is honestly baffling to me, especially since, as some of the more reasonable have pointed out, its absurdly similar to the reaction on the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker. You would think they might have learned.

Well, quite. And the Anne Hathaway casting provoked a similar ridicule, if I recall.

I have no opinion about Ben Afflek at all, but I love seeing your inner mule come out!

I just don't like dogpiling of fannish hate. Especially if I can't see what on earth provoked it. Like I said, if it were someone like Mel Gibson, I could at least see where people are coming from (in terms of personality, not acting), but Ben Afflek?

I have zero interest in the upcoming film, but the reaction to Affleck's casting just leaves me baffled.

Yep. Yesterday I browsed through the internet and thought...whose puppy did he kick? Or, as the kids say today: What is this even?

Amusingly, Joss Whedon just tweeted that Affleck will be great in the role. As with his Marti Noxon-defending (and Dawn Summers-defending, etc.), I like a creator that will defend the unjustly maligned fannish underdogs from time to time. :)

Go Joss! I'm glad to hear it.

I think the reaction is not helped by the confusion over whether Affleck!Batman is going to be a continuation of the Bale!Batman franchise or whether Bale is going to be treated as its own series with Affleck being a reboot.

If it's a continuation, then I'm not keen, on the basis that I don't generally like recasting parts for the same character and I also don't believe the Bale!Batman universe has room for invulnerable alien superheroes. If it's a different universe, then I can get behind Affleck easily.
