For real?

Oct 25, 2011 10:28

At first I thought this was a big practical joke and/or a fannish prank, but apparantly it is for real: Joss Whedon used his spare time (?) between Avengers directing to film Much Ado About Nothing at his house with various of his favourite actors from pretty much every show he ever was involved with. *blinks* I remember first hearing about the ( Read more... )

joss whedon, shakespeare, three musketeers, much ado about nothing, bamberg, dumas

basically making him Jack Bristow and Milady Irina Derevko instead isn't a twist I objected to

Actually I quite like that.

This was filmed at the Alte Hofhaltung

That's a fabulous location. I'm surprised it isn't used more often.

Parisian house of ill repute a la Bamberg

LOL. That wasn't the impression I got of it when I saw it, but you have to applaud the film makers ingenuity.

I'd forgotten it was filmed in Bamberg. I wasn't going to bother with it but now I just might!

Oh yes, the lure of the familiar location! Cavendish and I are already afraid we will go and have to watch all of World War Z when it comes out, because we were in Glasgow at exactly the same time they were filming some scenes there with Brad Pitt... *g*

It is used more often. There is a successful children's book series filmed which uses it as a location as well. :) Plus as I said, it's our stage for the summer theatre festival.

Athos and Milady as spies and lovers with her double crossing him as the reason for his descent into brooding and booze is my favourite idea from the film.

That's excellent for filming! Some landmarks of my local area (see icon) show up in movies every now and then, but they're always part of a weird alien landscape and tinted purple or something. No musketeers!

It's the first time we had the musketeers (and international film money) here as well, but Bamberg does already show up in a couple of German films.

Your icon: note to self: do visit Australia sooner rather than later.

I LOVE JOSS! Thanks for the info about this!

And that movie was also filmed here in Potsdam, funny, that! And Bamberg, so pretty indeed.

Film magic unites various Franconian towns, Babelsberg and Herrenchiemsee to one place.:) Did they film the Tower scenes in Potsdam?

While Claudio is, as far as I know, universally regarded as terrible (which always makes me feel bad for actors in that part because how do you make him not suck?), he might have fans because of Robert Sean Leonard in the Branagh movie.

(BTW, the most baffling reaction I've seen to this admittedly weird news is 'Why would I want to see another Much Ado movie? I love Branagh's so much!' THIS IS NOT HOW SHAKESPEARE WORKS! /ranty)

Ken B. would be the first to agree with you that this is not how Shakespeare works. :) (BTW, I remembered he also shot a quick black and white film with his friends while working on a big budget opus - In the Bleak Midwinter while he was busy with either Frankenstein or Hamlet itself.

Hm, would be interesting to find out whether die hard Wilson fans go back on Robert Sean Leonard's filmography and are pro Claudio. On the other hand, well, Claudio. So I doubt it.

RSL does do a phenomenal acting job with his Adam's apple in that one scene (and he has die hard fans that go back at least as far as Dead Poets Society) but it's hard to imagine any contemporary adult with critical faculties not noticing that Claudio sucks. I mean, he doesn't suck in a way that can be mistaken for positive qualities.

And with all these similarities in their careers, surely it's time for Joss and Ken to collaborate on . a Chimes at Midnight rock opera something.

I'm all for the Chimes at Midnight rock opera. They really should do that. Maybe there is a Marvel movie directors meeting club going on as we speak. :)

The Bamberg locations are really the only reason why I still consider watching that adaptation at some point...!
