Since I have a few new people on my flist, let me repeat last year's pimping of In the Bleak Midwinter as one of my favourite Christmas movies. Directed and written by Kenneth Branagh but not starring him, about a Christmas production of Hamlet in the provinces, featuring the usual Branagh suspects as the ensemble, witty and despite stern ( Read more... )

You know, between this, your Year-in-Fandom Meme post, and you changing your header image, I'm finding myself more and more tempted to give Merlin a try! Ironically, the show was recommended to me by my parents, some time before I first bumped into it on LJ, which in fact kept me from actively seeking it out. Not that my parents' tastes are bad, because they're not, but they're often a lot more conventional than mine. Maybe I should have taken their advice more quickly, though. Even if only to cheer for Gwen (who, judging by what I picked up here and there, seems to be in a similar situation as her Torchwood namesake) because (like you :) ) I do love to cheer for fandom's underdogs, even more if they're female and awesome!

Bearing in mind Merlin is mainly aimed at a young audience, I think you'd enjoy it. It's charming, wears its cheerful anachronism without embarassment, has an excellent cast, and unites the silly with the moving quite well.

Bashing of Gwens makes me unhappy. The only difference between when it in fandoms started with the two is that Torchwood Gwen was hated from the get go whereas Merlin Gwen was liked - as long as she adored the white girl uncritically and did not have a romance with one half of the show's most popular slash pairing. Bah.

After, among other things, Torchwood and Lost, something lighthearted sounds like a pretty nice change, so yeah, I think I'll dip my toes into Merlin and see how it appeals! From what you mention, though, it's probably a good idea for me not to get too involved with the fandom itself - because character bashing is still the one thing that'll cause me to back out of a fandom real fast. In fact, while I haven't read any of your Merlin fics, I do admire you very much for swimming against the stream and writing Gwen fic anyway, from your own perspective, no matter what the rest of fandom thinks about it; personally, I think I'd lose courage very quickly. And I'm only now realizing how lucky I was that I kind of rolled into fandom via Babylon 5 (and then later Twin Peaks) where, at least at this point in time, bashing isn't an issue at all (okay, except maybe for Byron, but who can blame us for that ( ... )

My favorite part of the David impression is how it starts off all dominant when in character and then goes soft and wibbly when it's of David himself. <3 And lol "it's just a face full of hair!" How many times have I looked at those caps and icons of that moment and wondered the same? XD

Just goes to show the Moff thinks David is wibbly-wobbly in real life. :)
